Examples of Important Duties Provides Leadership to Crew Performing Tree Work
- Obtains work requests and delegates tasks to crew to ensure work is completed in a safe, efficient, and productive manner
- Plans, coordinates, and leads work to successfully achieve completion within timeframes
- Conducts job safety briefings with personnel in accordance with MOSH Standards
- Takes initiative to resolve conflicts that occur on the job site
- Ensures proper tools and equipment are onsite to perform work
- Ensures crew members are wearing personal protective equipment and all safety standards are being followed while performing work
- Gives input to supervisor on performance of crew members for evaluations
Performs Tree Care Operations Utilizing Specialty Equipment and Practices:
- Performs work using aerial lift truck and climbs trees to prune and remove trees in accordance with ANSI standards
- Safely climbs trees in accordance with ANSI standards using saddle, ropes, climbing hooks, safety lanyards and other specialized safety equipment
- Removes or lowers trees and limbs utilizing ropes, pulleys, lowering devices, and other specialized equipment
- Operates chain saw and other specialized equipment to fell and prune unwanted, diseased, hazardous or dead trees
- Maintains safety compliance and is responsible for inspecting equipment before each climb
- Inspects trees before work is started for hazards and safety concerns in accordance with industry standards
- May occasionally respond to emergency tree work in evenings or on weekends
Maintains and Operates Tools/Equipment:
- Routinely inspects, operates and maintains chainsaws, chippers, and equipment used in tree care operations
- Conducts routine preventative maintenance on assigned equipment (e.g., chain saws, brush chipper, etc.)
- Drives trucks, often with trailer, to carry crew and equipment to work sites
- Provides routine maintenance and reports major maintenance and repairs as needed to fleet services
- Operates bucket trucks, log trucks, aerial lifts, trailers, pickup trucks and equipment needed to perform work
Important Skills and Characteristics:- Considerable skill in operation of vehicles requiring a CDL license, aerial lift trucks, chainsaws, chippers, hand tools and other specialized tree care equipment
- Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to lead a crew to accomplish work objectives, problem solve and interact effectively with others
Minimum Qualifications Tree Worker/Climber: High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).One (1) year of tree maintenance experience including six months of tree climbing experience.An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total 1 year.Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.Depending on area of assignment, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, and must be in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.Pass Commission medical examination.

Preferred Qualifications
Five (5) years of tree maintenance and tree climbing experience.One (1) year of foreman/leadership experience. May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.
Working Conditions: Primarily works outdoors. Requires exposure to adverse weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, and hazardous materials while working at considerable heights. Hazardous conditions exist due to exposure to power tools, power lines, wild animals, stinging insects, poison ivy, oak or sumac, and dead and dangerous trees and limbs. Incumbents in this class must frequently: remain in a stationary position, balance and pull while removing trees, operate vehicles, tools and equipment, ascend and descend ladders and trees, position self to complete manual work, move equipment, tools and supplies weighing over 100 pounds. Overtime and emergency on-call time may be required.

The following benefit summary is provided for informational purposes only and is not, nor should be construed as an employment agreement with the M-NCPPC, implied or actual. It is not all-inclusive and is subject to change. Benefits listed are extended to all Merit System employees of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). All plans are optional except the Defined Benefit and Long-Term Disability plans.
Eligibility You have 45 days from your hire date to elect your benefits. Your coverage begins on the first of the month following receipt of your enrollment forms and required documentation.

Basic Life and AD&D Insurance (Employee Pays 20%: Commission Pays 80%)- Two (2) times base salary; maximum benefit is $200,000 for each

- Annually covers up to 688 hours for own serious medical condition, and 480 hours for parental responsibilities (birthadoption or foster care), and 80-160 hours for serious medical condition of an immediate family member
