Job Description Summary:

Designs and implements graphics associated with internal and external web and print resources as well as other business materials within an established brand identity. Ensures design consistency across digital and physical platforms. Works cooperatively on multiple projects with cross-functional teams, meeting deadlines and budget constraints. Under the supervision of more senior design staff, assists with translating strategic direction into high-quality design.

Incumbent in this job assists with the basic design and development of graphics and illustrations for use in publications, displays, and other media. Incumbent typically follows standards and specifications, including typography and page design, provided by graphics designers, but normally works independently on mastered tasks.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Design publication and related communications assets collaborating on design across the full scope of a project-adapting to responsive and accessible web environments.
  • Collaborates with publications, digital, and technical staff as well as program staff to define graphics requirements that complement overall functionality and purpose of Academies materials.
  • Collaborate with design and web leadership to adapt and enhance materials and templates.
  • Participate in the preparation of materials and surveys for user testing.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of graphics software applications and web languages including Adobe applications, HTML, CSS. An understanding of user experience and prototyping, preferably a familiarity with Figma and/or similar tools. An understanding of accessibility standards. Other interests such as information design, motion graphics, 3D, photography or videography are encouraged. Ability to work successfully in a team environment.

Knowledge or experience with desktop publishing tools, software, and applications on PC and/or Macintosh platforms. Ability to solve intellectual problems through selection and application of commonly used rules, procedures, and precedents. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication. Good verbal communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with most levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge. Associate Degree in Arts, Graphic/Web Design, or related field preferred. A portfolio is required with application.

Minimum Experience: Three years of related experience.
Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Supervisor, Composition, Design & Graphics. Supervisor is available to assign and review work.
Compensation: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $23.04 - $28.79 per hour. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range. This position is a benefits-eligible position. Work Environment: Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 40%, with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
