Job Summary

As a member of the Office of Development, the Associate Director of Development is accountable for relationship building with National Academy of Engineering (NAE) members and donors and outreach, engagement, and stewardship for program alums and NAE sections. Works with the Director, Development for the National Academy of Engineering, Academy senior leadership, and Development Office colleagues to plan, implement, and coordinate effective strategies and approaches to identify, cultivate, solicit and close major and leadership gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. Collaborates with the director of development to set annual fundraising plans or to plan and deliver events and experiences that support major giving, annual giving, institutional giving and planned giving, etc. Manages a portfolio of major gift prospects including cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, via face-to-face meetings, phone calls, emails, etc. Travels locally and nationally to visit prospects. Prepares and reviews fundraising letters, proposals and other materials. Liaises and coordinates with Academy membership and executive offices, and development colleagues to plan and deliver fundraising goals. Actively participates in building a culture of philanthropy across the organization and a high performance team. Works collaboratively across a decentralized development office and with senior program colleagues across a multi-tiered institution.

Applies in-depth professional level knowledge to independently solve a full range of complex problems. Assignments are broadly defined and require judgment and creativity to complete. Has authority to take whatever action deemed advisable or necessary, but is required to advise superiors. Some persuasion, negotiation and compromise involved in interchanges. May establish processes/procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operation of somewhat complex functions.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Relationship building with NAE members and donors: (75%)
  • Collaborate with the director of development to set annual fundraising goals and help execute plans to deliver experiences and events that support major, annual, planned, and corporate giving, etc.
  • Actively manage a portfolio of major gift prospects including qualification/discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, via face-to-face meetings, zooms, phone calls, emails, etc. Travels locally and nationally to visit prospects.
  • Communicate with and meet prospective and current donors to the NAE and engage them with the NAE and its programs and activities.
  • Ensure donors receive timely and customized stewardship via handwritten notes, emails of thanks/follow up, reports and/or acknowledgments, etc.


Outreach, engagement, and stewardship for NAE programs and NAE sections (25%)
  • Foster and implement new and existing program alumni engagement through strategic outreach efforts.
  • Coordinate ongoing NAE Council outreach to new NAE members and encourage section giving.
  • Provide technical and creative writing expertise for internal and external communications efforts, highlighting stories of donor and alumni engagement, and requesting fundraising support/writing proposals.
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with program directors and NAE leadership.
  • Coordinate section outreach efforts in partnership with the Director of Annual Giving. Engage with NAE section chairs, class chairs, and members to participate in philanthropy.


Other Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide support to the Director of Development for NAE Annual, National, Regional, Council (Board), and development committee meetings. This may include drafting letters, emails, fundraising reports, analysis of giving trends, presentation slides, etc.
  • Assist the Director of Development with portfolio maintenance, prospect assignments, prioritization, and visit outreach.
  • Coordinate with research and advancement services for requests and provided updates on donors/prospects.
  • Join weekly annual giving, donor relations, and planned giving meetings to ensure NAE fundraising needs can be anticipated with a proactive approach.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Core Competencies:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize work, and flexibility to change. Good attention to detail.
  • MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams. Database skills (Raiser's Edge is a plus).
  • Ability to work across the organization with colleagues and superiors.


Minimum and Preferred Experience:
  • Minimum experience: 5 years of fundraising, development, or sales experience.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit fundraising, annual giving
  • Thorough understanding of philanthropy and professional trends.
  • Experience in soliciting major gifts or related experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of sophisticated fundraising practices, annual giving, planned giving techniques, and essential functions of a proactive and innovative fundraising organization.
  • Ability to conceptualize, plan, and implement a programmatic approach to building relationships and securing philanthropic support, including setting ambitious goals, developing strategies for stewardship, prioritizing activities, planning and delivering events, and orchestrating the involvement of volunteers and organization leadership.
  • Appreciation of the importance of sciences, engineering, and medicine and the mission of the National Academies.
  • Preferred experience with alumni relations.


Minimum and Preferred Educational Background:
  • Minimum education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent knowledge


Compensation

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $88,450 - $121,620. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range. This position is a benefits-eligible position. Work Environment:

Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage two days a week (40%), with travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
