POSITION SUMMARY

Controls and directs the Supply of 600-volt DC (Direct Current) traction power for the Authority's Rail Transit System.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Controls switching of 600-volt DC traction power system by means of direct operation of supervisory control equipment or by communications to field personnel via dial, radio, or other communication devices.
  • Operates switches or circuit breakers to isolate faulty equipment or segments of the distribution system for the protection of life and property.
  • Instructs and advises construction and emergency crews as to proper switching operations to perform or connections to install or remove where feeder cables of the power system are involved.
  • Advises linemen of what lateral or feed conductors to disconnect and what emergency or line switches to manipulate or conductor ties to make in order to restore service when train service has been halted because of de-energized contact conductors.
  • Receives reports of defects in system power and assigns electrical maintenance repairers according to area and class.
  • Reviews and revises feeder diagrams, section maps, graphs, diagrams, etc., relating to the power system.
  • Operates subway emergency ventilating fans, supervises the operation of subway drainage pumps.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

CHALLENGES
  • Required to have knowledge of the operation of Authority substations and be familiar with the various types of circuits comprising the DC distribution system.
  • Must know how to read and interpret blueprints and circuit diagrams.
  • Must have a knowledge of and know how to operate supervisory control equipment to open, close, start and stop remote devices and to use illuminated diagram board.
  • Must know the location of the various principal facilities of the power system.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Three (3) years of CTA Rail Controller, Rail Operations Leadership, Signal Maintenance, Power Maintenance, or Testing Engineer experience preferred, or five (5) years external experience in Rail Road Signal Maintenance or Traction Power, or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to position.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field preferred.
  • Required to submit and pass drug and alcohol testing.
  • Required to pass certification/re-certification test(s).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual acumen, manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer key boards.
  • Required to work alone for long periods in a seated position and performs work of such a nature that requires close visual demands.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Working knowledge of rail system functions, routes, rail patterns, operating regulations, and scheduling techniques.
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering operations and equipment as it relates to power control.
  • Working knowledge of rail operations equipment.
  • Working knowledge in the practices and processes in proper service restoration techniques.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills suitable for providing clear and concise radio communication and public address announcements.
  • Ability to write and express oneself in a clear, logical and comprehensive manner.
  • Ability to document occurrences or events in a chronological order.
  • Ability to read and interpret all scheduling related materials.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with Authority personnel and outside agencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • General office environment.
  • Required to work various days and hours on a regular basis.
  • Works in close proximity with electrically energized conductors.
  • Subject to 24 hour call.

  • Standard office equipment.
  • Personal computer and related software and equipment.
