Duties

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise in administration to provide advisory and technical services to management.

This position starts at a salary of $103,409.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $134,435.00 (GS-13, Step 10)

In this Supervisory Mission Support Specialist position, you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals analyzing and refining existing work methods and developing new methods and procedures. Typical work assignments include:
  • Establishing production standards and prepares performance requirement of their appraisals.
  • Advising employees of the performance requirements of their positions and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting the requirements.
  • Resolving complaints and grievances not requiring referral to higher authority and makes recommendations for solution of those referred to the next higher organizational level.
  • Keeping supervisor continuously informed of status of cases and workloads and prepares reports as required.
  • Ensuring equity in determining qualifications, selections, assignments, training, promotions, details, discipline, and awards to employees.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
  • Providing and obtaining a full range of mission support services, which include, but are not limited to, management analysis, personnel management, financial management, office services and systems support.
  • Providing complex administrative services, including, but not limited to, management and information systems, budget, finance, procurement, personnel, telecommunications, logistics, records and files, printing, mail, travel, and office equipment.
  • Identifying ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of these services at the local level.
  • Providing representation for the office in dealings with vendors and organizations within the agency that have primary responsibility for these services.

You must:
  • Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and
  • Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 11/15/2024.

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP.   • Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university
  • Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government
Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.

Additional information

Supervisory Probationary Period: You may be required to serve an 18 month probationary period upon appointment.

Leadership Training: All newly appointed first-time CBP Supervisors are required to complete mandatory training. The training will be scheduled by the Office of Training and Development within the first 90 days of appointment. The duration of the training will include 3 weeks of in residence training in Harpers Ferry, WV. Note: This training may be waived if previously completed.
