    Job Description

    PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

    The Coordinator III, Science Lab will be responsible for creating and managing a multidimensional educational link between the science lectures and the science laboratory experience (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics & Geology). This is accomplished through close coordination with the professors' lectures and a knowledge of the sciences. Leads, plans, develops, evaluates and improves assigned science lab. Directs the daily and general operations of the science teaching labs including creating laboratory schedules, maintaining inventory, and quality assurance of lab items, managing department budgets, coordinating and updating laboratory safety protocols, and hiring/training/evaluating/supervising lab assistants.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Directs daily operations of the science teaching lab; Recruit, hire, schedule, and prioritize work and activities and organize training for lab assistants
  • Analyze and evaluate success factors for the science lab and create plans for improvement to ensure learning environment enhances student intellectual and skills development
  • Ensure and maintain local/state/federal compliance of processes and documentation with assigned lab; includes chemical and bio-hazardous waste and ongoing maintenance of Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Schedule equipment repair/inspection and chemical & medical waste removal
  • Manage budget and order needed supplies, chemicals and equipment; work with vendors, purchasing, and Accounts Payable to purchase materials; assist with department/division budget preparation, track expenditures, monitor expenses versus budgets, and assure that discrepancies are resolved
  • Train and mentor subordinates on proper technique in making chemical solutions and on calibrating and checking laboratory instrument/equipment
  • Manage and plan various lab classrooms and schedules including meetings, seminars, events, and general support
  • Direct and monitor laboratory safety protocols such as OSHA Hazard Communication, OSHA Laboratory Standard, Tier II Chemical Reporting & Right to Know Stations (SDS), and monitor regulated & bio-hazardous materials ensuring proper disposal
  • Maintain an accurate inventory and quality assurance of lab items including media, videos, software, models, mannequins, equipment, and learning lab materials
  • Oversee cleanliness and maintenance of facility; walk facility regularly to observe and report unsafe or unsightly conditions, and ensure these items are addressed and corrected promptly
  • Identify new technologies & safety regulations and conduct risk management assessments to evaluate the prospective lab and ensure compliance of the college with regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned

  • An astute and broad knowledge of the sciences and related safety protocols and regulations (EPA, OSHA) for the successful handling of day-to-day operations

  • PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

    The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

    WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:
  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office and/or laboratory environment with exposure to safety hazards typical in a laboratory (working with chemicals, live specimens, moving equipment, etc.)
  • Safety protocol must be strictly followed at all times


  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience


  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • At least 3 years of science lab experience

    Hiring salary range is $48,152-$55,375

    Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
