POSITION SUMMARY

Performs general cleaning duties for rail cars, shop areas, offices and other maintenance terminal facilities and equipment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Sweeps, cleans and removes debris from rail car interiors.
  • Sweeps, cleans and removes debris from offices, lunchrooms, washrooms, storage and shop areas.
  • Washes, scrubs, waxes interior and exterior of rail cars.
  • Operates compressed air hose and uses cleaning brushes as necessary.
  • Uses tools such as screwdriver, wrench or pliers as necessary.
  • Empties trash cans as required.
  • Loads and unloads supply trucks and flat cars.
  • Assists train crews and car repairers with troubleshooting, cutting out cars and vehicle doors, and in making other operational adjustments as required.
  • Prepares related reports and maintains records.
  • Enters data into computer terminal.
  • Maneuvers 55-gallon drums as necessary.
  • Removes debris from rail yards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Monitors and reports any suspicious person, item, etc.
  • Guides passengers to secure areas.
  • Directs emergency personnel to problem areas.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Required to properly identify and report any suspicious person, package or item.
  • Required to assist with the safety of passengers during emergency situations.
  • Required to guide emergency personnel to a specified problem.
  • Assists in restoring to normal operations.
  • Required to submit to and pass drug and alcohol testing as mandated.
  • Required to pass a physical examination, possess good uncorrected or corrected vision and hearing; must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Must successfully complete equipment troubleshooting training or have previously qualified to perform troubleshooting functions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Required to move, position self and traverse for extensive periods of time.
  • Must move and position material weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to observe details and exchange accurate information.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Required to have knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment used to clean rail cars, shop and office areas.
  • Must possess knowledge of graffiti removal procedures and techniques.
  • Required to be knowledgeable of shop work area, yard layouts and repair activities, including safety rules and procedures.
  • Must understand and follow written and verbal instructions, bulletins, announcements, etc. and possess the skills and abilities to prepare written materials at a similar level.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Occasionally exposed to all types of weather.
  • Required to work in pits and on ladders and be exposed to grease and shop noise.
  • Exposed to 600-volt third rail.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZED
  • Mops, brooms, cleaning brushes.
  • Assorted tools, such as screwdriver, wrenches, etc.
