ABOUT THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MEDICINE (NAM)
The National Academy of Medicine (NAM), established in 1970 under the name Institute of Medicine (IOM), is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health and medicine; the natural, social, and behavioral sciences; and beyond. With the authority of the 1863 Congressional Charter of the National Academy of Sciences, requested and signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the NAM serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as adviser to the nation and the international community. ABOUT THE PROGRAMS
The NAM Grand Challenge on Climate Change, Human Health, and Equity (CGC) is a multi-year strategic initiative to improve and protect human health, well-being, and equity by working to transform systems that both contribute to and are impacted by climate change. The Climate Grand Challenge has five strategic objectives: 1) Catalyze the health sector to reduce its climate footprint and ensure its resilience; 2) Develop a roadmap report for systems transformation; 3) Accelerate research and innovation at the intersection of climate, health and equity; 4) Communicate the climate crisis as a public health and equity crisis, and 5) Reduce climate-related health inequities. Across these objectives, the initiative has multiple programs and projects, some of which are underway, and others are to be launched.

The Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being (CWB) and Resilience is a network of leaders and representatives of many major health professional organizations and health systems across the United States. Since 2017, the Collaborative has convened, published, and shaped the national conversation to advance three goals:1) Raise the visibility of clinician anxiety, burnout, depression, stress, and suicide, ; 2) Improve baseline understanding of challenges to clinician well-being; 3) Advance evidence-based, multidisciplinary solutions to improve patient care by caring for the caregiver.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The NAM CGC and CWB teams are looking to bring on an Impact and Engagement Officer (I&EO) to play a pivotal strategic role in the Initiative to Accelerate the National Climate & Health Movement and the Changemaker Campaign for Health Workforce Well-Being ("campaigns"). Working with directors from the CGC, CWB, and Communications teams, the C&EO will be responsible for maximizing the impact of these campaigns through outreach, engagement strategies, and relationship cultivation.

The I&EO will be responsible for developing and implementing a recruitment strategy to increase the visibility of the programs among health systems, educational institutions, government organizations, industry, community organizations, funders, and other communities within the health and medicine sphere. In addition, the I&EO is responsible for planning various engagement activities, such as town halls, and developing external communication and messages tailored for current and prospective participants in program activities.

In addition, the I&EO will have an important role in working with the CGC team to strategize, develop, and execute a partner engagement plan that will look to strengthen the impact, reach, and longevity of the CGC. This will include working with each of the CGC's workstream directors to develop proactive, ongoing, and effective sponsor stewardship that is consistent across workstreams.

The successful candidate will be comfortable with a matrixed reporting structure; reporting directly to the Director, Climate Grand Challenge, as well as a dotted line to the NAM Director of Strategic Communications & Engagement. This position will sit within the CGC team and will serve as the CGC team liaison to the Communications Team to ensure the cohesion of communications and engagement strategies. This position will also work closely with the directors and teams for CWB and the Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the U.S. Health Sector (a CGC workstream), specifically on the work of their movements and campaigns.

Job Description:

1. Campaign Management:
  • Campaign development and relationships: Leads the strategy & execution to recruit participants in CGC and CWB campaigns, including those beyond the traditional/existing NAM networks.
  • Assessing and improving campaign impact: Works with program directors to expand on existing activities and create new activities to fully maximize the impact of movements. Will determine and track impact indicators.
  • Activities and outcomes design: Works with program directors to develop strategy and tactics for how to add value for participants in campaigns (e.g., through convenings, awards, etc.), as well to help define outcomes and sub-campaigns.


2. Climate Partner Engagement:
  • Partner stewardship: Manages relationships with CGC partners (e.g., funders and collaborator organizations), including tracking and communicating impact, keeping partners informed about the program and projects and ensure that they are being given opportunities to engage, etc.
  • Reporting: Designs and produces reports (impact, etc.) to be communicated at regular intervals (e.g., on an annual basis) as well as outputs such as notes to partners recapping major program events and outputs.
  • Sponsor stewardship strategy: Develops an overarching, consistent sponsor stewardship strategy that will be implemented by each of the climate workstream directors.
  • Sponsor engagement support: Works alongside workstream directors to support engagement and documentation development aimed at both new and existing sponsors or partners.


3. Communications:
  • Collaborates with the NAM Communications team to inform public outreach strategy and materials and ensure alignment of campaign and partner outreach activities with broader communications goals for CGC and CWB.
  • Tracks and identifies communications opportunities across CGC and relays this information to the NAM Communications team. Supports the NAM Communications team in developing integrated messages and storytelling across CGC.


4. Writing:
  • Composes and edits targeted outreach materials such as proposals, impact reports, event recaps, and personalized invitations. Develops persuasive content out of complex topics and issues. Responsible for the accuracy, and overall quality of all written communications. This position requires excellent writing skills, including the ability to develop message segmentation by audience.


5. Event Planning and Management:
  • Helps plan and execute events and meetings, specifically with a focus on partner and sponsor engagement. Coordinates messages, presentations and background materials.


6. Teamwork:
  • Builds relationships and networks across all levels of the organization including internal and external communications colleagues to identify communications opportunities and stories to increase engagement.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience developing and leading campaigns and/or movements similar to the CGC and CWB projects.
  • Expertise working with, and developing, relationships with high-level partners and sponsors.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Specifically, the ability to research and understand different audiences and tailor messages accordingly.
  • Ability to work successfully in a multicultural team environment. Ability to make sound judgment and decision with supervisory consultation or by following procedures. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication.
  • Experience working with funders and sponsor, including proposals and reporting requirements.
  • Strong project management skills, detail oriented and timely. Strong organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute effective engagement strategies.
  • Team-oriented, comfortable working with strong expert personalities and able to contribute through persuasion, executional skills, and quality of work.
  • Ability to serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.
  • Interest in working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Ability to represent the National Academy of Medicine and its programs externally.


Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master's degree, or equivalent experience.

Minimum Experience: Three years of related professional experience.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to the Director, Grand Challenge on Climate Change, Human Health, and Equity. Matrixed reporting to the Director of NAM Strategic Communications and Engagement.

Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $88,450 - $110,560. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range. This is a benefits-eligible position. Work Environment: Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 40%, with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
