Duties NOTE: This amends vacancy announcement EXSER/24-12614246-CBP to change the closing date from 12-09-24 to 12-16-24. The U.S. Border Patrol is the primary federal law enforcement organization responsible for preventing the entry of terrorists and their weapons from entering the United States between official U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) ports of entry. Border Patrol's traditional mission is to enforce immigration laws and to detect, interdict, and apprehend those who attempt to illegally enter or smuggle people or contraband across U.S. borders between official ports of entry and to prevent the entry of terrorists and weapons of terrorism. Border Patrol enforces the laws that protect America's homeland through the detection, interdiction, and apprehension of those who attempt to illegally enter or smuggle any person or contraband across our Nation's border. As Chief Patrol Agent, you will be responsible for planning and directing sector-wide programs for the enforcement of the provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Laws. Through subordinate supervisors and a staff of uniformed and civilian personnel, you will plan, direct, and implement all facets of the sector-wide enforcement program. The principal Border Patrol program functions involve the prevention, apprehension, and removal of individuals who illegally enter the United States, the identification and deterrence of alien smugglers, and the enforcement of criminal and other provisions of the Immigration and Nationality laws. You will develop and implement sector-wide policies and guidance within broad Headquarters and regional-level program objectives. You will manage the complete processing and presentation of developed prosecution cases and serve as liaison with United States Attorneys, the public, the press, and other information media. Requirements Conditions of Employment Position Designation: This position is designated as Career Reserved. Probationary Period: You will serve a one-year probationary period unless you previously completed the probationary period in the SES. Political Appointee Employee Verifications: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office. Selective Service: If you are a male and are hired, and if you were born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under Selective Service law. Drug Testing: This position has been identified as a Testing Designated Position under the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Drug-Free Workplace Program. Satisfactory completion of the drug test is a condition of placement and/or employment in the position and the incumbent(s) of this position is thereafter subject to Random Drug Testing. Lautenberg Amendment: This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition [TITLE 18, U.S.C., SECTION 922(G)(9)]. A "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" is generally defined under the statute as any offense involving the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by the victim's current or former domestic partner, parent, or guardian. The term "convicted", as defined in the statute, excludes any person whose conviction has been expunged, set-aside, or pardoned or any person whose civil rights have been restored unless the pardon, expungement or restoration of civil rights expressly prohibits the possession of firearms or ammunition. Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence within the meaning of the referenced statute are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (TITLE 18, U.S.C., SECTION 1001). Technical Qualifications - Mandatory 6.Expert knowledge of federal laws, rules, and regulations related to border patrol operations (e.g., detection, apprehension, and deterrence of terrorists and their weapons, illegal immigrants, and contraband entering the United States). Additional information Relocation Bonus: CBP may authorize a relocation bonus (not to exceed 25% of basic pay) for an eligible selectee. A service agreement would be required. Relocation Expenses: We may choose to pay your relocation expenses in accordance with Federal Travel Regulations. Travel: Overnight travel may be required on regular or recurring basis. Telework eligible: Yes, based on agency policy. Leave: You will earn 26 vacation days and 13 days of sick leave per year. In addition, the Government observes 11 regular paid holidays each year. Spanish Language Requirement: Proficiency in speaking the Spanish language is required. Background Investigation: This position is a sensitive position and the tentative selectee must undergo and successfully complete a background investigation as a condition of placement/ retention in the position. A Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) security clearance will be required upon appointment. Law Enforcement Retirement: This position will carry secondary law enforcement coverage as provided in 5 U.S.C. 8336(c), and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d), for eligible law enforcement employees. Employees who reach age 57 with at least 20 years of creditable service under law enforcement provisions are subject to mandatory separation from this position.
