The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Prince George's Department of Parks and Recreation, Natural & Historic Resources Division, Park Ranger Unit is seeking a Seasonal Intermittent Park Ranger to conduct natural resource and wildlife projects, field patrols and trail work. This position will work under the Department's Deer Management Program.

This position requires working between dusk and dawn during the times wherein deer management activities take place (select days from January through March). This position also requires varying shift schedules to include early mornings and early evenings.

Responsibilities include wildlife/natural resource work, routine patrols of fishing and hunting sites, patrols at undeveloped and developed parks, wildlife habitat and conservation projects, and trail work

General work hours will vary and will include weekdays, at least one weekend day, some early mornings and evenings, and possible holidays. The weekly work schedule will be 30 +/- hours per week not to exceed 40 hours. The position will be active from January 2025 until March 31, 2025.

This position pays at a rate of $15.25 to $20.13 per hour, dependent on experience and qualifications.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Build and maintain deer exclosures on park land; gather and analyze data from exclosures.
  • Maintain sign-in kiosks at recreational hunting sites, as well as conduct routine patrols and enforce hunting and fishing regulations on park land.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of a Park Police-based Sharpshooting Program in January through March.
  • Ability to read and analyze maps.
  • Assist with nuisance wildlife management.
  • Ability to safely use chainsaws, brush mowers, and hand tools for trail work and maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • College degree in appropriate field such as education, natural resource management, environmental science, wildlife management, or related field
  • Experience working in parks, dealing with the public, and conducting programs for all age groups.
  • Verifiable experience with hunting wild game, specifically deer, preferred (i.e. Able to provide proof of having taken a hunter safety course or hunting license within the last two years)
  • Experience with fishing is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Able to carry/lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings/nights and weekends/weekdays.
  • Required to work from 2:00pm to 2:00am during select days from January through March.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in inclement winter weather, or hot summer weather.
  • Basic knife handling skills and comfortable around firearms.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Supplemental Information

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will have hunting experience and be comfortable handling/field dressing deer carcasses. Related education experience in wildlife management, science related background, previous park ranger work or park-related experience is preferred.

Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.

A complete background investigation will be completed prior to hire.

This position does not provide benefits.

This position is from January 2025 until March 31st only.

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
