About the Division

The Budget, Financial Planning, and Human Resources Division manages critical financial and human resources functions. Our team oversees budget preparation, financial forecasting, and accounting processes to ensure effective management of over $500 million in annual revenues, while maintaining compliance with City and regulatory financial requirements.

On the Human Resources side, we focus on supporting the department's most valuable asset—our employees. This encompasses all aspects of the employee experience, including recruitment, onboarding, timekeeping, employee health and safety, leaves of absence, performance management, learning and development, and separations. Our goal is to ensure smooth operations, foster employee growth, and support a positive and efficient work environment.

Position Duties

The Energy Department is currently seeking to hire one (1) intern to support the Human Resources and Administrative team in the Budget, Financial Planning, and Human Resources Division.

The Human Resources and Administrative Intern’s primary responsibility will be to assist with day-to-day Human Resources and general office management functions. Projects could include:

  • Assist the Human Resources team with organizing and filing confidential materials.
  • Support the preparation and distribution of recruitment materials.
  • Assist with the facilitation of in-person interviews by coordinating schedules, calendaring, booking conference rooms, and welcoming candidates.
  • Assist with new employee onboarding.
  • Maintain and update the department's IT inventory, ensuring all assets are accurately tracked, documented, and in good working condition.
  • Assist with the creation and upkeep of the department’s organizational charts, ensuring accuracy and timely updates to reflect current staffing structures.
  • Attend career fairs and other events to connect with potential candidates and share information about the department.
  • Other HR and administrative duties and projects as assigned.

Pay: Student Intern: $15.17 – $21.66 per hour (unbenefited). These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

Work Schedule: During the academic year, interns are recommended to work 15-30 hours per week, with schedules determined collaboratively between the hiring manager and the intern based on student availability and project needs. During summer and winter breaks, interns may work up to 40 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications

Student Intern: Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program.

Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for these internship positions.

  • Understanding of the importance of handling sensitive and confidential materials with discretion.
  • Professional and welcoming demeanor when interacting with candidates, new employees, and career fair attendees.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail to ensure accuracy when handling files, updating documents, and managing schedules.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ability to learn other systems or tools (e.g., Asana, PeopleSoft).
