Position Title: Professor, English/World Languages Job Description: POSITION TITLE: FACULTY, JOURNALISM/ENGLISH STATUS: Full time, Tenure track DEPARTMENT: English, Philosophy and World Languages SUB-DIVISION: Arts and Sciences DIVISION: Academic Affairs CLASSIFICATION: Exempt UNION: Faculty-AFT Local 604 REPORTS TO: Department Chair PLACEMENT: Placement on salary schedule is dependent on qualifications. Base Compensation Hiring Range for 2025/2026 Academic Year: $61,912-$110,322/annually (9 months). Base Compensation Hiring Range for 2026/2027 Academic Year: $63,770-$113,632/annually (9 months). Compensation placement based on education and related teaching/work experience. Competitive starting pay is dependent on education and experience. POSITION SUMMARY Adapt to new and changing situations and demonstrate a positive attitude. Twelve credit hours a semester constitute a standard load when that load consists of nine credit hours of journalism and composition courses; fifteen credit hours a semester constitutes a standard load otherwise. Course assignments may be late afternoon, evening, Saturday, and at branch campuses or satellite centers. Position is subject to all terms and provisions of the Joliet Junior College faculty contract. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning. 2. Demonstrate a strong understanding and commitment to the community college mission. 3. Teach courses primarily in journalism, with technical writing, developmental writing, and/or composition courses scheduled when necessary. 4. Teach online and/or hybrid courses when enrollment and availability allow. 5. Advise the student newspaper, The Blazer. 6. Participate in course development, assessment, and planning activities. 7. Work closely with other instructors and special programs and services within the college to determine placements, curriculum, and academic support. 8. Participate in appropriate departmental meetings and recruitment activities; serve on committees. 9. Assist students with academic advising. 10. Teach at other campus sites as needed. 11. Meet other contractual obligations as spelled out in the Joliet Junior College faculty contract. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Master's Degree in Journalism, with at least an additional 18 hours of graduate coursework in English. 2. Two years of teaching experience at the collegiate level. 3. Expertise in appropriate technologies for instruction, including learning management systems. 4. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and learning. 5. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence. 6. Demonstrated commitment to the college's core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 1. Additional Master's Degree in English. 2. Teaching experience at the community college level. 3. Experience in teaching online and/or hybrid courses. 4. Experience in course development and assessment, planning, quality and accreditation processes, and committee service. 5. Experience with traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds. 6. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency. 7. Demonstrated multicultural competence. PHYSICAL DEMANDS 1. Normal classroom physical demands. WORKING CONDITIONS 1. Duties are performed indoors in the usual classroom environment.
