Vice President, Business Development

Core Focus: Responsible for driving the company's growth strategy by identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, collaborations, acquisitions and partnerships for medicines that address genetically defined conditions. This role is responsible for leading a group that works closely with the R&D group to identify, analyze and then transact deals designed to both expand our portfolio and accelerate revenue growth. The ideal candidate is a seasoned business development leader with expertise in deal making strategy and transactions within the biotech space.

Primary Responsibilities:

Growth Strategy:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy aligned with the company's goals in genetic medicine.
    • Early-stage research and technology deals to enhance and complement the strong internal pipeline of research projects at BioMarin.
    • Mid to late-stage development deals designed to add incremental income in the midterm.
  • Conduct market research, competitive analysis and opportunity assessments to identify high potential growth areas.
Deal Sourcing and Execution:
  • Identify, evaluate, and negotiate potential partnerships, mergers, acquisitions, licensing deals, and collaborations that align with the company's long-term objectives.
  • Lead negotiation and execution of deals from initial contract through close, working closely with cross functional teams to assess and validate opportunities.
Relationship Building and Networking:
  • Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, including potential partners, investors, opinion leaders and regulatory bodies.
Key Outcomes:
  • Revenue Growth: secure new business partnerships and licensing deals that contribute to a targeted increase in annual revenue growth.
  • Strategic Portfolio Growth: Successfully identify and close multiple deals annually that enhance the company's product and/or technology pipeline.
Experience and Qualifications:
  • Experience: At least 10 years jn business development role, strategic partnerships, or alliance management within biotech, pharmaceutical of life science sector.
  • Market and Competitive Analysis: Strong experience in market analysis, competitive intelligence, and strategic planning to drive entry into new markets, expand existing product lines, and establish a robust market presence in the genetic medicine landscape.
  • MD/PhD/PharmD degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology or equivalent experience combined with an MBA or equivalent experience.
  • Robust understanding of the full drug development process, lifecycle management and commercialization of therapeutics.
  • A strategic thinker with outstanding business instincts who can help chart the course and translate into actionable, value-creating results for the company.
  • Solid network and reputation in the biopharmaceutical arenas.
  • An ability to embrace teamwork and collaboration. Exceptional skills in establishing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including R&D, finance, legal and commercial teams to align on strategic goals and execute successful partnership and deals.
  • Energetic, resourceful self-starter with high integrity, strong executive presence and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment
  • Proven experience leading and developing high-performing teams, driving alignment across cross-functional groups and fostering a culture of collaboration to achieve organizational objectives.
Position requires 2 days onsite in San Rafael, CA.

In the U.S., the salary range for this position is $ 276,000 to $ 414,000 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A discretionary bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
