Job Summary

The Maintenance Controls Technician will be primarily responsible for supporting the site-level Maintenance Department through monitoring the reliability of industrial automation systems, supporting downtime troubleshooting, and providing industrial controls knowledge. Secondarily, this position will act as an intermediary link to Central Engineering to support alignment on problem definition, corrective actions, and overall process knowledge. A successful Maintenance Controls technician has electrical/mechanical aptitudes, troubleshooting self-initiative, and strong documentation/communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform required maintenance, repair, rebuild, or calibration of electrical control components
  • Utilize controls software and as-built machine documentation to support process troubleshooting
  • Support root cause analysis and problem-solving activities related to significant machine downtime events
  • Support implementation and improvement of preventive/predictive maintenance programs
  • Support equipment installation coordination/supervision associated with facility needs and projects
  • Daily monitoring of various plant utilities that can include chilled water, compress air, natural gas, fire protection systems, and security systems
  • Complete process troubleshooting and preventive maintenance work orders.
  • Maintain controls hardware/software knowledge to ensure up-to-date troubleshooting capabilities
  • Operate and comply within CCM internal policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Operate and comply with local, state, and federal regulatory codes
  • Work with mechanical/electrical technicians to help develop their controls troubleshooting skills


Required Skills/Abilities/Knowledge:

  • Proficiency with electrical instrumentation (sensors, switches, solenoids, load cells, etc)
  • Ability to interpret mechanical, electrical, and process and instrumentation (P&ID) drawings.
  • Proficiency in Allen-Bradley hardware and Rockwell software
  • Knowledge of PLC languages (ladder logic, function block, structured text, sequential function charts, etc)
  • Knowledge of low-voltage power systems (480/208VAC, 240VAC, 120VAC, 24VDC)
  • Awareness of controls communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, etc)
  • Knowledge of computer maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Awareness of electrical regulatory codes (NEC, NFPA, NEMA, etc)
  • Knowledge of safe working practices around moving machinery and electrical equipment.
  • Understanding of OSHA and industrial safety protocols
  • Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective inter -personal skills including ability to be a team player, take instruction, and train others

Education and Experience:

  • Highschool diploma
  • Degree from technical school, or industrial maintenance certifications (PLC, Machine Logic, etc)
  • Technical military specialties considered
  • Experience working as a control technician in an industrial manufacturing environment

Equipment Used:

  • Precision measurement equipment (Micrometers, gauges, measurement devices)
  • Electrical instrumentation (megohmmeter, multimeter, amperage monitoring systems)
  • Hand tools
  • Office equipment (computer, phone, kiosk)
  • Computer systems (CMMS, SAP, MS programs)

Working Conditions:

  • Activities occur inside an insulation manufacturing facility. Job includes but are not limited to exposure to the following.
    • Temperatures exposed to both Ambient/outside temperatures.
    • Nuisance dust, use of chemicals, working with mechanical parts, pinch points
    • Noise of industrial machinery
  • Typically, 40 hours per week with overtime as required
  • Days/shift vary based on facility need
  • Fast paced 24/7 operation

Travel Requirement:

  • Overnight travel up to 10%; this will include travel to other facilities and training.
