Basic Function and Responsibility:

Under general supervision, plan, manage and oversee the operation of the data network, related equipment, and software. Supervise and/or perform the installation and maintenance of the network infrastructure, all network products and provide support for related networked systems like security cameras, building management systems, IOT systems, etc.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support for college-wide data networks, requiring knowledge of Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching, WANs, Wireless networking, TCP/IP protocols and scripting.
  • Install and maintain new hardware and software critical to the operation of the networks, including a variety of switches, routers, wireless access points and firewalls.
  • Perform copper and fiber optic cable termination and testing according to industrial standards. Identify and resolve cabling problems.
  • Supervise and secure access to the network and network host systems. Plan and update implementation of network security and firewalls.
  • Organize and prepare systems and change management documentation. Create and maintain necessary working drawings.
  • Maintain an in depth knowledge of technology including hardware, communications, and networking technologies (LAN, WAN and Wireless).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network problems. Work with vendors on complex issues and hardware/software support and replacement.
  • Monitor system performance and security. Create and maintain management and performance monitoring scripts.
  • Work as a team member with the data center staff to configure, deploy, secure and troubleshoot host based network services.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications and Working Conditions:
  • A Bachelor's Degree with specific course work in Computer Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
  • A minimum of two years information technology work experience, with special knowledge of the technical components of networking is required. A minimum of two years' experience with IP protocols in routed networks is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • The ability to perform moderate physical labor, light lifting and use a step ladder is required.
  • Two years networking work experience with Cisco equipment and Cisco CCNA or higher certification preferred.
  • AutoCAD, Visio or other computer based drawing tool experience preferred.
  • Python, power shell, Unix shell or other scripting language experience preferred.
  • Networking experience in an institution of higher education is preferred.
  • Responsibilities may require evening and weekend work.

General supervision is received from the Senior Networks and Telecommunications Manager.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

HOURS: Monday - Friday - 8:15 am - 5:00 pm (Hours may vary due to the needs of the College)

SALARY: The hourly salary of this position is $33.46 which equates to $67,440 annualized based on Oakton's summer hours schedule.

Based on the needs of the college and with Administrator approval, some positions at the college may have a hybrid schedule option available after 30 working days.

All employees must maintain their primary residence in Illinois, Indiana, or a reciprocal state with Illinois. Reciprocal states include Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Illinois has tax agreements with these reciprocal states. Employees may have their primary residence in Indiana since Indiana is adjacent to Illinois.
