We are looking for an R&D Technician for our Cartersville, GA R&D Laboratory.

The Technician will work primarily to support research and development projects within the expanded polystyrene (EPS), polyurethane spray foam, and specialty foam market segments. This individual is responsible for product development support as well as maintenance of existing and new chemical formulations. Occasional support for QC/Manufacturing is also required. This encompasses assurance that raw material specifications align with processing guidelines, equipment capabilities, as well as the design and performance requirements of products used in the expanded polystyrene (EPS) industry and building envelope systems. This position will operate under the general guidance of the R&D Manager and Senior Scientist.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support R&D, manufacturing and product testing for EPS, polyurethane insulation, and rigid foam products.
  • Typical R&D Technician duties
    • Product research, development, and testing support
    • R&D and Quality Laboratory testing
    • Technical writing including testing reports and project reports
    • R&D test batch blending and processing
    • Pilot batch production support in plant for R&D
    • Operate and maintain foam processing machine
    • Fabrication of lab scale construction assemblies and prototypes
    • Assist scientists, chemists and engineers in all aspects of product design
    • Operate and troubleshoot test equipment
    • Improve methods to ensure data repeatability and reproducibility
    • Execute data entry and management
    • Complete chemical inventory, SDS filing, spare parts and supply checks, and operating equipment maintenance
    • Other duties assigned by the R&D Manager or Senior Scientist
  • Understand and follow company rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Read and follow standard test methods and procedures
  • Handling, storage, and disposal of all chemicals and hazardous materials
  • Ability to multitask, work with flexible assignments and schedules
  • Interpersonal skills-oral communication, written communication
  • Communication with other employees within and outside of R&D

Education and Experience:

  • Associates or Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science (or related technical discipline) is preferred. Candidates with other relevant industry experience may be considered. Practical understanding of equipment maintenance required
  • 3+ years as an R&D Technician, Plant Quality Lab Technician or Material Test Operator in a manufacturing plant, test lab, or R&D facility preferred
  • Experience with polystyrene, polyurethane or other foamed plastics preferred
  • Experience in residential or commercial construction is preferred
  • Experience using construction tools preferred


Working Conditions:

The basic work environment is a combination of office, laboratory, and factory settings. Some travel is required, up to 1-2 week(s) of travel per year (although more travel may be required on occasion). The atmosphere is relatively fast paced and occasionally becomes stressful. The environment demands that multiple projects be worked on at the same time. Minimal direct supervision. Can be noisy and dirty when in the lab or on the factory floor.
