The Office of Civic Engagement and Social Justice (Lang CESJ) is situated within the Dean’s Office at Eugene Lang College for Liberal Arts, and is dedicated to promoting, supporting and implementing purposeful community-based teaching, learning and engagement within a social justice framework at Lang, The New School and beyond. We facilitate the ways in which students and faculty can integrate ethical community engagement and social justice activism both inside and outside of the classroom. We invite our alumni and community partners to share needs that the college/university can support through our courses, collaborations and programs. Civic engagement and social justice are not only legacies of our namesake Eugene M. Lang, but also ongoing practices within the teaching, learning and scholarship at our college

The Director for the Office of Civic Engagement & Social Justice provides strategic oversight and daily management of programs for students, staff, and faculty. In addition, the director is an active participant in regional and national networks, helping to position the college as a leader in civic engagement and social justice among peer institutions. This is a 12-month senior level position reporting to the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives and Civic Partnerships with a dotted line report to the Dean of the college. This position is a member of Lang’s senior leadership team and represents Lang and the Dean’s Office internally and externally in realizing Lang’s commitment to social justice. Some evenings and weekends are required.

Responsibilities
CESJ Programs & Office Oversight

  • Provide leadership in a fast-paced office environment, supervising and managing operations of Lang CESJ including proposing managing, CESJ annual budgets, grants, and endowed funds, and setting annual goals, and long-range plans to ensure the quality of Lang CESJ programs
  • Guide,implement, and set the strategic direction for Lang CESJ student, staff, and faculty programs/events such as developing workshops, speakers series, and other programs including the CESJ Summer Fellows program, and the Lang Prison Initiative.
  • Develop programming specifically to support faculty around classroom climate and inclusive syllabi
  • Assess programs, prepare reports, and supervise Graduate Assistant on data collection for annual reports
  • Gural Scholars program: collaborate with the Faculty Director of the Gural Scholars on program design, implementation, and budget; communicate with and support Gural Faculty with onboarding and classroom management; provide support and advocacy for students in immediate crisis in the Gural Scholars Program
  • Serve as the primary liaison to CESJ’s existing community partners and external organizations; Create and sustain new community-campus partnerships that are mutually beneficial and that enhance student learning, departmental linkages, and faculty research through community engagement
  • Edit and contribute regularly to the CESJ weekly newsletter
  • Supervise Associate Director of Civic Engagement and Social Justice
  • College Wide Leadership of Strategic Initiatives
  • Serve as the dean’s advisor on thinking and communicating strategically about social justice issues and in seeking fundraising, grant writing, and other resource development initiatives
  • Serve as a lead resource for Lang students, faculty, and staff in need of resources or consultation related to campus climate, identity, access, equity and strategies for inclusion and offer related programming and workshops
  • Co-chair the Lang Social Justice Committee with the Dean
  • Facilitate Anti-Bias Training for Lang faculty search committees and develop faculty capacity in this arena through workshops, trainings, and the development of resource materials, and interview all Lang faculty candidates and provide feedback to search committees
  • Provide a safe space and community for one-on-one support and resources for Lang students, faculty, and staff dealing with identity development, navigating life, coping with campus climate concerns, struggling with academic demands, etc.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs on dispute resolution between faculty and students

New School Leadership

  • Liaise, collaborate, and maintain strong relationships with offices and programs across the college and university related to civic engagement and social justice; serve on related committees as needed.
  • Examples of existing internal community partnerships are with the Office of Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice, Sanctuary Working Group, Student Health, Parsons Scholars Program, HEOP, Student Leadership Initiatives, Title IX Office, Office of Orientation and Transitions, Student Advocacy and Support, Financial Aid and Student Accounts
  • Coordinate and collaborate with staff colleagues, academic departments, and faculty across the college and university to develop linkages to and facilitate Lang CESJ programs and events
  • Serve on University Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice Committee
  • Additional duties and committee membership assigned as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Relevant advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate)
  • Five years of related professional experience in higher education or community based and social justice organizations
  • Two years of staff supervision experience
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to access, diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice and comfort working with diverse groups of students, faculty, and community partners
  • Experience designing and leading educational programs and events
  • Experience in budget planning and tracking
  • Experience in serving an advocate for students and supporting faculty and staff with EISJ concerns
  • Ability to lead, manage, and prioritize multiple projects and tasks to completion
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with the principles, theories, and research in the fields of academic civic engagement and social justice education
  • Exceptionally strong skills in dialogue facilitation, organizational management, community building, and relationship management, deep listening, public speaking, and professional writing
  • Facility in working both collaboratively and as a strategic leader
  • Flexibility, sense of humor, and ability to adapt easily to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft, Google, and social media platforms
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to adhere to University COVID-19 Policy and requirements
  • Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, with specific days onsite and others remote
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three plus years of experience in higher education context
  • Strong proficiency with intersectionality and experience serving and supporting first-generation, LGBTQIAGNC, and students of color with multiple marginalized identities
  • Experience developing learning outcomes and assessment tools for curricular and co-curricular programs
  • Familiarity with New York City or comparable urban environs, and knowledge of nonprofit, government, community-based organizations, and cultural institutions
