The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, Natural and Historical Resources Division, is currently seeking Seasonal/Intermittent applicants to fill Park Naturalist positions at Clearwater Nature Center in Clinton, Maryland.

This is a part-time 20-30 hours per week, year round position. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.

This position pays at a rate of $15.00 per hour to $20.00 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Candidate will provide interpretive and educational programs in natural history to various groups such as schools, scouts, general public and summer youth campers.
  • Conducts research in various subject matters and upon approval of senior naturalist staff will present the program with the use of various naturalist props.
  • Respond to visitor, telephone, and staff inquiries concerning natural history and conservation matters.
  • Greets visitors, provides interpretive program information, promotes positive public relations for the nature center programs and encourages public appreciation for the natural environment.

Minimum Qualifications

College degree in appropriate field together with progressively responsible management supervisory, and administrative experience which is equal to the management and supervision of a major program or facility; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the applicant's ability to direct and be responsible for a major program and/or facility under a minimum amount of supervision.

Preferred Candidates will possess:
  • BA/BS in Education or Science earned or in progress
  • Experience working with children.
  • Experience in creating and conducting environmental education lessons
  • Experience working with and care of captive live animals (birds, reptiles, mammals, invertebrates)
  • Maryland natural history knowledge
  • Willingness to work outside.
  • Superior communication skills; outgoing and friendly
  • Organizational ability
  • Team player
  • CPR/First Aid certification
  • Be able to pass a FBI and MD Background check
  • Valid driver's license

This position does not provide benefits.

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
