The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George's County, has immediate openings for Group Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers at the following facility: Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex (SPORTSPLEX) - Landover.

*Final rate determined by Classification & Compensation Office.

For Group Fitness Instructors: Work schedule may include a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends. Qualified instructors will lead instruction for line dancing, Zumba®, cross training, sculpt & tone, various boot camps, family fitness, Tai Chi /Yoga classes, senior fitness and cycling classes. Facility is open to innovative programming ideas.

For Personal Trainers: Work schedule will be determined by the demand of personal training and fitness assessments. Qualified trainers will work with a diverse type of clientele including seniors, athletes, teens, and adult populations.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Enforces all rules and regulations as they relate to fitness and class safety.
  • Completes daily duties, including wiping down of equipment used for classes
Other Duties:
  • Attends meetings, and all other required training.
  • Secures a substitute for any scheduled hours/shifts that cannot be worked.
  • Maintains required certification(s).
  • Promotes Fitness Center programming and performs other related work duties and/or special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and work well with the public and other staff.
  • Communicates instructions in a professional and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to establish a positive rapport by using tact and discretion with participants, parents, and staff.
  • Must display a high degree of emotional maturity while keeping difficult situations in proper perspective.
  • Deals effectively with the public.
  • Must be able to process information accurately.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid certification in their discipline. Must also possess a valid CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Interview with the Fitness Center Manager
Perspective candidates should successfully demonstrate the below skills:
Group Fitness Candidates:
1. Ability to set up, and facilitate as the lead of a formatted class with varying skill levels dealing with overall fitness performance related to one of the following disciplines; Cycling, Zumba, Boot Camps, Tai Chi, Yoga, Senior Fitness etc.

2. Will be evaluated on a timed Demo within a 15-minute time frame by onsite fitness/recreation professionals

Personal Trainer Candidates:
1. Ability to assess individual needs from a combination of interviewing and screens, tests, to recommend a program to achieve their individual goals

2. Will be evaluated on a within a 20-minute time frame by onsite fitness/recreation professionals

Must commit to working for the Department of Parks and Recreation at one of the hiring facilities for a one (1) year timeframe.

Supplemental Information

These positions are Seasonal/part-time and do not include a benefit package.

Must successfully pass a complete background investigation prior to hire.

May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.

The following information is a summary of benefits extended to all Seasonal employees of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). This is for informational purposes only and is subject to change.

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
