amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is seeking a dynamic and strategic Director of Philanthropy.

amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is one of the world’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education, and advocacy. Since 1985, amfAR has invested close to $600 million in its programs and has awarded grants to more than 3,500 research teams worldwide.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Director of Philanthropy shall lead in the creation and execution of a revenue growth strategy to grow an existing loyal donor portfolio, while also attracting new & diverse revenue sources in support of amfAR’s mission.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Philanthropy leads a team responsible for the development and growth of Major Gifts, Institutional, Direct Response, Digital, Workplace Giving and other non-event related revenue streams.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for leading and overseeing all Major Gifts, Direct Response, Institutional, Digital and Workplace Giving revenue sources, with the goal of exceeding and growing on annual projections.
Implement and focus on multi-year asking plans, and the development of new campaign opportunities.
Provide leadership and work closely with amfAR Chief Executive Officer and Chief Development Officer to identify and solicit large individual and institutional gifts.
Coach, motivate and develop a full-time development team of 7 colleagues to grow professionally and maximize their impact.
Assess progress on goals regularly and adjust course as necessary.
Proactively source, cultivate, and steward a personal portfolio of high-net-worth donors.
Utilize data strategically to inform decisions, focusing on retention, priming the prospect pipeline, and upgrading donors.
Evaluate current practices and processes for high-end stewardship and solicitation mailings/asks, special interest communication, revenue tracking and CRM management.
Develop and execute pitches and strategies to reach goals for distinct donor segments.
Creatively enhance the quality of Direct Response and Digital campaigns.
Collaborate with other senior staff members to drive mission-critical, cross-functional initiatives.
Keep abreast of developments in the fundraising field.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and interest in the history and the challenges of HIV/AIDS is expected, as is the desire to realize amfAR’s mission to find a cure and make AIDS history.

Proved track record in building a culture of philanthropy and engaging one-on-one with donors, someone who enjoy and puts into practice a proactive solicitation approach.

Experience managing a wide range of philanthropic revenue, including the solicitation and stewardship of individuals, family and corporate foundations, track record of securing large multi-year gift. A successful track record in executing fundraising strategy, setting priorities, managing multiple projects and working effectively under pressure to achieve individual and organizational goals.

Highly organized, detail-oriented, reliable, and flexible; thrives in a fast-paced environment and is someone up for the challenge. A consummate team player with a flexible, collaborative and creative approach who can lead from behind and empower teammates to contribute their best.

Exceptional writing and interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to communicate effectively with a high degree of professionalism across multiple departments and diverse stakeholders. Strong computer literacy with have strong experience using a fundraising database.

Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of experience in multi-dimensional fundraising with an emphasis on securing major gifts and track record of growing new revenue sources.

Must be able to travel and work extended hours as needed.

Salary range: $143,000 to $175,000.
