The Montgomery County Department of Parks, Horticulture, Forestry and Environmental Education Division is currently seeking applicants to fill several seasonal/part-time intermittent instructor positions. We are looking for instructors with a background in a specific skill area including fitness, dance, yoga, and outdoor recreation to join our team. Classes will be held in parks county-wide. The ideal candidate can work independently, is energetic and enjoys teaching in an indoor and outdoor environment.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Develops and delivers interpretive and recreation programs and events.
  • Works collaboratively with other staff members to design and implement new programs that serve the community.
  • Implements recreation classes that engage and educate participants by providing instruction, supervision and skill set.
  • Provides and outlines lesson plans and descriptions for proposed classes and programs.
  • Ensures an inviting, positive, and safe environment.
  • Communicates effectively with program coordinator and class participants.
  • Maintains communication with class participants.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in skill area or specialized education and training in skill.
  • Ability to demonstrate and perform in skill area.
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Must hold a valid certification in discipline/field.
  • Must be able to work daytime and evenings.
  • Must have a valid CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Must be able to pass FBI and MD background check.
  • Ability to communicate in another language a plus.

Working Conditions
  • Flexible work schedule. Hours per week is dependent on instructor availability.
  • Classes may be offered on a quarterly basis and generally scheduled up to four months in advance.
  • Primarily working outside in a park setting or inside a Park Activity Building.
  • May be exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions and seasonal temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, stretch, lift, carry, and move/lift objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to arrive to classes at least fifteen minutes before scheduled class time.
  • Responsible for opening and closing of indoor venues.

Supplemental Information
  • This position is not eligible for benefits.
  • A background investigation will be completed prior to hire.

The following information is a summary of benefits extended to all Seasonal employees of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). This is for informational purposes only and is subject to change.

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
