Sponsored by Prince George's County Planning Board, the Collegiate Internship Program is designed to provide job training in planning and urban development to qualified college students who anticipate careers in these areas. Interns will be assigned to work with the Planning Department staff at The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in Prince George's County. Internships will be available for the summer. Interns will work full-time (40 hours per week) and will be compensated.

Areas of Opportunities

The Prince George's County Planning Department has a wide variety of opportunities that will provide students with a realistic work experience. Selected students will have the opportunity to work with experienced individuals in their respective disciplines. The Prince George's County Planning Department will be seeking students pursuing degrees or disciplines in the following areas:
  • Civil Engineering
  • Communications/Public Relations
  • Economic/Community Development
  • Environmental Planning/Science
  • Geography/Geographic Information Systems
  • Historic Preservation
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Public Policy/Administration
  • Sociology
  • Transportation Planning
  • Urban Design/Studies
  • Regional and Community Planning

Minimum Qualifications

Student Eligibility
  • Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Students must have at least a junior class standing and be enrolled in a higher education program at the undergraduate or graduate level

Additional Criteria Used for Selection
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity and/or experience with computers
  • Leadership experience
  • References from past supervisors and/or professors
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work well with minimal supervision
  • Strong writing skills
  • Work or volunteer experience that might be applicabl

Summer internships will run May 28 through August 16, 2024.

Deadlines

Applications for summer 2024 internship positions will be accepted on a rolling basis until positions are filled.

  • Students must submit an M-NCPPC online application to be considered for employment.
  • Students must submit a college transcript. An unofficial transcript is acceptable.
  • Students must submit a personal statement indicating goals and aspirations that may be enhanced by participation in the program. Personal statements must be at least one page long.

The following information is a summary of benefits extended to all Seasonal employees of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). This is for informational purposes only and is subject to change.

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
