    Job Description

    PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

    The Assistant prepares the setup of each lab so the necessary materials are provided for each class, checks each time a class leaves to make sure the next class will also have the required materials, and provides students with the materials needed to participate in their classes. This is accomplished through setup of laboratory spaces, cleaning of used materials and preparation of necessary substances. He or She prepares chemistry and physics labs, maintains and repairs lab equipment, and cleans lab areas. He or She carefully and precisely makes solutions for the labs, organizes lab equipment, and disposes of chemical waste properly.

    E SSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Clean the lab area. After the students are done with the lab to put away anything that was left out, and to prepare for the next lab. Clean dishes and equipment
  • Dispose chemical waste. After each lab collect the chemical waste, and store or dispose the waste in the proper and safe manner
  • Handle dangerous chemicals. Properly and safely handle solutions of acids, bases, toxic chemicals, etc.
  • Help students run the NMR, UV, and IR spectrometer. Help teach and run the spectrometers for the students for their lab results
  • Maintain lab equipment. Make sure that the equipment in both chemistry and physics are running as intended and are in peak efficiency
  • Maintain miscellaneous lab materials, such as watering or planting corn, feeding fish, cutting tubing
  • Make chemical solutions. Prepare any solutions that are needed for laboratory experiments (base solutions, acid solutions, etc.)
  • Monitor lab students. Make sure the students are following all the safety procedures, and following the procedures
  • Operate autoclave
  • Organize the lab area. Make sure everything is easy to find and accessible, and is not in the way for safety
  • Prepare the chemistry and physics labs. Make sure the labs have all the supplies (chemical solutions, lab equipment, waste containers, etc.) that are needed, and are in the lab for the professor and the students to conduct their experiments
  • Put together lab equipment. Build and put together new lab equipment for use in the labs. Repair lab equipment. Repair the lab equipment that broke down or is not running efficiently
  • Set up and tear down lab exercises
  • Test lab equipment. Make sure new and old lab equipment works and is running at peak efficiency
  • Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned


  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Has a general knowledge of Internet Explorer, and search engines
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, organizational, and strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and work cooperatively as a member of a team
  • Must be detail oriented and precise
  • Must be able to follow the lab rules and guidelines
  • Must be punctual


  • PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

    The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters and record boxes. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity.

    WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

    The work involves regular exposure to outdoor elements, and/or regular exposure to hazardous items such as chemicals, toxic or caustic materials, contamination, and electrical hazards. This exposure requires special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED

  • Completion of Chem 1411 or equivalent college-level Chemistry coursework

    Hourly Pay Rate is $11.78
