Description

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. We are currently seeking a Senior Associate Director, Policy (Standards and Care Delivery) for our Washington, DC office. This position is a hybrid role (three days in the office, two days working remote).

Starting base salary = $155,000 - $194,000 a year (commensurate with related experience).

The Senior Associate Director, Policy (Standards and Care Delivery) will develop, advocate and manage policy positions that enable the AHA to have a positive impact on the political and policy issues facing its members. S/he is responsible for leading AHA's policy work on the development of new drugs and devices that have implications for the delivery of care in the nations hospitals and health systems. S/he will also be responsible for advocating for hospitals on quality and safety standards, surveys, and guidance, and contribute to AHA's work to evolve policies to better enable high quality, affordable, patient-centered care delivery. This role includes a particular focus on bolstering the various supply chains that support hospital and health system operations, among other areas. This work will require interacting with hospital leaders and Hill and Federal agency staff, including from the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission. The ideal candidate will be able to balance an array of high visibility responsibilities under continuous time and performance pressures. S/he will represent the AHA in public forums and with high ranking government and accreditation officials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Manage specific policy issues for AHA, especially those related to the development of new drug therapies and technologies and the safe use of medications.
  2. Monitor trends in clinical care and life sciences, and alert AHA, its members, and appropriate government agencies to changes that will require new public policies.
  3. Monitor and respond on behalf of hospitals to changes in the Medicare conditions of participation/conditions of coverage and the survey and certification functions for hospitals and health systems.
  4. Monitor hospital supply chains and advocate for effective policies that will keep needed supplies available to hospitals, including developing an awareness of how trade policies, transportation policy and other issues impact the ability of hospitals to secure needed supplies.
  5. Develop and maintain effective relationships with member hospitals and health systems, including presenting at AHA committee and regional policy board meetings, state hospital association meetings, and gatherings of other groups working on similar issues.
  6. Develop and maintain effective relationships with senior government officials at CMS, NIH, AHRQ and the FDA, hospital leaders and managers, state and allied executives, national leaders in quality of care and The Joint Commission.
  7. Influence policy makers by presenting key concepts and ideas on behalf of the AHA members in public forums.
  8. Produce clear and concise issue and option analyses in oral and written formats in a variety of time frames ranging from short-term, immediate turnaround through longer- term projects.
  9. Work collaboratively with other AHA policy and advocacy colleagues to articulate association and hospital positions on quality measures and coordinated care.
  10. Analyze legislation and regulations and write regulatory advisories to inform members. Write comment letters, position statements and other advocacy documents. Make presentations to members and policymakers advocating policy changes. Serve as a spokesperson for AHA on press inquiries related to drug and quality of care issues.
  11. Assists the EVP with coordination and alignment with other key internal areas, including communications, PAC, policy and legal departments.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned by manager.
