KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of free, public charter schools that prepares students for success in college and life. In 1995, we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx. Our goal was to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in high school, college, and beyond- and in so doing, to prove what is possible for all students. Today, our New York City network is comprised of 18 schools, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive support program for our alumni. KIPP NYC Public Schools currently serves more than 8,300 students and alumni and has a staff of more than 1,000.

Position Overview
KIPP NYC is in search of a dynamic and mission-driven leader to step into the role of Managing Director of Development as the organizations approaches its 30th anniversary. The Managing Director of Development will lead KIPP NYC’s development team in a multi-faceted strategic initiative to support KIPP NYC’s ambitious regional core program and growth plan. By regularly visiting the 18 KIPP NYC schools in Upper Manhattan, Bronx and Brooklyn and forging strong external partnerships, the Managing Director of Development drives the success of KIPP NYC’s development program. The Managing Director of Development directly manages the Associate Director of Foundation and Corporate Giving, the Manager of Data and Prospect Research, and works closely with the Director of External Affairs, the Senior Associate for External Affairs, and reports to the Chief of External Affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Team Management & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Lead the KIPP NYC development team
  • Create and facilitate engaging professional development, including current research on education trends and social service issues relevant KIPP NYC
  • Oversee regular team meetings, team operations and systems, including goal setting and performance reviews
  • Direct staff in proactively identifying cultivation opportunities among funders in respective portfolios and analyzing prospect likelihood
  • Create a strategy where schools and KIPP NYC region have a clear understanding regarding fundraising and development policies between schools and CMO
  • Encourage close collaboration across the External Affairs team (marketing, advocacy, Student Recruitment and Enrollment and After School) and contribute to building a positive, strong team culture
  • Work in close collaboration with the Senior Director of the Capital Campaign and the Chief of External Affairs to meet KIPP NYC’s ambitious capital growth plans
  • Partner with the regional data team to analyze KIPP NYC data, for development related communication with external partners
  • Collaborate with the KIPP Foundation Development team to ensure strong communication with national and regional donors
  • Develop annual operating budget and funding goals for development team

Portfolio Management

  • Plan and execute a robust annual fund program targeting individual donors that will raise $10M-$14M
  • Reconcile private revenue in collaboration with KIPP NYC Finance and Development teams
  • Establish and manage a major gifts program for annual fund of current and prospective donors, through customized cultivation and stewardship, including communication, regular updates, and event invitations
  • Collaborate with senior KIPP NYC leaders for specialized site visits and follow-up with high profile donors and prospective supporters
  • Works with the Director of External Affairs to lead KIPP NYC Associate Council, including events and identifying junior board members
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and events, to keep current in the fields of education (K-12 and college access, persistence and career) as it pertains to KIPP NYC’s work and programs

Systems Management

  • Create and implement systems and tools to improve department efficiency and effectiveness
  • Oversee grant management systems, including tracking and reporting
  • Monitor compliance with grant deliverables and outcomes
  • Ensure accurate reporting on individual giving project budget
  • Manage Development Associate to ensure all giving, deadlines and donor information is accurate and current in Raiser’s Edge

Qualifications

  • At least 7 years’ experience in development and advancement positions and management experience
  • Exceptional strategic, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Able to operate at multiple levels, from developing high-level strategy to overseeing operational details
  • Demonstrated track record of making decisions based on robust data analysis
  • Exposure to high-performing education reform and/or general academic settings preferred
  • Exceptional project management skills, especially in managing multiple priorities simultaneously while still sweating the small details
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships with stakeholders across functional and organizational lines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Creative, analytical thinker with an ability to quickly implement thoughtful solutions in a fast-paced environment
  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience with CRM databases, Raiser’s Edge preferred

Compensation and Benefits

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $175,000 to $230,000 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band. Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range, however they are ultimately determined by scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
