The M-NCPPC Archaeology Office of the Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD) is seeking energetic and reliable part-time Archaeological Technicians to assist with fieldwork, collections, and public education/outreach.

The Archaeology Office is a county-wide unit responsible for preserving, studying, and interpreting the archaeological resources of Prince George's County within M-NCPPC property. The office exists to inspire stewardship of our cultural resources by providing unique opportunities to experience a tangible connection to our shared past through the science of archaeology.

The successful candidate will be expected to uphold the M-NCPPC's Natural and Historic Resources Division's four strategic pillars:

Examples of Important Duties

  • Field responsibilities occur on M-NCPPC properties within Prince George's County and include research-based excavations assisted by volunteers and students, compliance-related survey and monitoring, and assistance writing field reports.
  • Archaeology collections responsibilities include assisting with maintaining state curation standards and database maintenance (i.e. processing artifacts, cataloging, loans/acquisitions, digitizing, conducting archaeological/historical research).
  • Training volunteers/students on field methods and collection procedures.
  • Public education and outreach are conducted in a variety of settings throughout the year and include leading culture resource tours on M-NCPPC property (i.e. archaeology hikes or kayaks), scheduling and creating programs, assisting with volunteer coordination, writing social media posts, and assisting with marketing (i.e. mass emailing, basic graphic design).
  • Providing support for ongoing Archaeology Office initiatives and administrative help.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or a related field; experience working in the Middle Atlantic region; and the completion of an archaeological field school or equivalent experience.
  • Candidates must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse audience.
  • Applicants will be required to work outdoors in various conditions and lift 40lbs. of equipment.
  • Familiarity with historical and pre-contact material culture and prior experience with artifact analysis is preferred.
  • Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule including Saturdays and Sundays, as needed, and have access to personal transportation.

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
