Job Description

This role will provide oversight and leadership to support the provision of legal advice supporting data protection, intellectual property, privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and procurement. They will also lead a team of nine legal professionals with two direct reports at the Senior Director level. This new leader will report to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary.

THE IMPACT YOU WILL MAKE

The Data, Technology & Transactions Deputy General Counsel - VP role will offer you the flexibility to make each day your own, while working alongside people who care so that you can deliver on the following responsibilities:
  • Provide oversight and leadership to support the provision of legal advice supporting data protection, intellectual property, privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), and procurement.
  • Serve as trusted advisor to the General Counsel, Chief Operating Officer, and business partners throughout the organization.
  • Drive an aligned approach for legal matters involving data protection, data privacy, and data licensing to support the Company's most important business strategies, goals, and objectives.
  • Lead and design processes to support engagement on emerging legal and transactional matters associated with new technology developments, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, while simultaneously managing data rights, privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual property, and other technology-related risks and asset protection strategies.
  • Stay up to date with new and emerging technologies and the changes and developments in laws, regulations, standards, and guidance related to their use, and as needed, help establish appropriate policies, procedures and practices associated with the company's adoption and use of these technologies.
  • Advise and assist in negotiating agreements related to technology products and services, cybersecurity, data access and sharing, data protection, and privacy.
  • Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team of legal professionals.

Qualifications

THE EXPERIENCE YOU BRING TO THE TEAM
  • 10+ years of legal leadership experience, ideally working both in a corporation's legal department and/or at a reputable law firm.
  • A legal background in intellectual property, data and digital transactions, privacy regulations, and cybersecurity.
  • Experience at a complex and highly regulated financial services institution is preferred.
  • Knowledge of privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines relevant to the financial services industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing legal support and strategic advice to senior and executive-level management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively across various levels and business functions.
  • A track record of leading, mentoring, and developing strong legal teams and growing talent.
  • JD from an ABA-approved law school and active member of the Bar.
