POSITION SUMMARY

Performs a variety of construction, janitorial and general laboring duties on Authority buildings and facilities, and other properties.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs general labor duties: (cutting grass and weeds, dismantling structures, pick up rubbish and debris, loading and unloading materials).
  • Sets up tools, equipment, scaffolds and ladders for craft and trade personnel.
  • Digs trenches, footing holes and similar excavations, and refills trenches with excavated material, using pick and shovel.
  • Uses hand tools to break and remove concrete.
  • Loads and unloads materials onto wheel barrows and trucks.
  • Installs and repairs woven wire fences, passenger information and other signs.
  • Sets up and operates air compressor and concrete mixer.
  • Removes snow manually and by use of power driven machinery. Spreads salt and sand.
  • Constructs and installs concrete bases, and removes forms from set concrete.
  • Mixes, pours, transports and spreads concrete, asphalt and gravel.
  • Retrieves materials and equipment from storerooms and delivers to craft and trade workers work area.
  • Maintains bus stops, garages, bus turnarounds and related buildings and facilities in a clean, neat and orderly condition.
  • Cleans craft and trade workers work area.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Must perform the physical activities associated with this position.
  • Must have a valid State of Illinois Drivers License.
  • Must pass applicable tests.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have strength in standing while cutting grass, digging trenches, spreading asphalt, raking grass, doing fence work, running jack hammer and other equipment, walking while operating snow blower, cutting grass, performing duties, sitting while riding in or driving work van, operating grass cutting machine and lift truck.
  • Must be able to lift ladders, cement bags, bags containing grass, leaves, trash, etc. (up to 125 lbs) sledgehammer, carry work supplies, jack hammer, fence parts and posts, wire, ladders, shovels, picks, pushing lawn mowers, snow blower, shovels, brooms, mops, wheel barrow and pulling air and water hoses.
  • Must be able to climb scaffolds, ladders, into work trucks, balancing while working in vicinity of third rail, while assisting carpenters with wood.
  • Must be able to stoop while working under el station stairs, garage pits, rail shop pits, and kneel to trim lower edge of hedges.
  • Must be able to reach for supplies, trying up high fence, to install CTA bus signs, etc., saline torch, work supplies. And fingering when doing patch work or putting finish on cement job.
  • Must be able to talk to communicate work procedures, dangerous situations, while performing team-work, putting up fence, and warning when operating gas mixture approaching train.
  • Must be able to see near for moving trains, while cutting and burning with torch, far for moving trains and color for rail track lights, train lights, and traffic signal lights.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Must be familiar with the various types of hand tools such as a pick, shovel and sledgehammer and know how to use them in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Required to possess the communication skills necessary to understand written and verbal instructions relating to this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Environment varies according to particular work assignment and must travel throughout CTA service area on CTA vehicles.
  • Exposed to extreme cold and heat subject to existing seasonal weather conditions.
  • Exposed to wet and/or humid existing weather conditions while digging holes underground.
  • Exposed to noise and vibrations from jack hammer, bobcat, law mowers, air compressor, concrete driller, rail cars, and noise from various trades in the shop.
  • Exposed to mechanical hazards from jack hammers, bobcats, air compressor, core driller, electrical hazards from forklift, third rail (600 volts), burn hazards from saline torch, explosives hazard from fuel island and aerosol cans, chemical hazards from weed killer solutions, graffiti removers, soaps and cleaning solvents, and height hazards when climbing ladders, scaffolds, (up to 65 ft in the air) walking along el tracks, and loading trucks.
  • Exposed to atmospheric conditions from fumes from diesel and bus exhaust, from odors from cleaning solvents, and weed killers, dust from shop floors, el platforms, jack hammers and spreading gravel and mist from graffiti removers.
