Examples of Important Duties

Programs

  • Develop and deliver interpretive and educational programs in natural history to various groups including schools, scouts, general public, and summer youth campers
  • Inspire public appreciation and care for the natural environment
  • Check in volunteer or program groups while handling walk ins or special event traffic

Hosting

  • Welcome visitors, answer questions in person and on the phone about programs, nature, and conservation matters
  • Ensure the facility is clean, safe, and presentable to visitors at all times
  • Check in visitors and groups while handling walk in traffic during hosting hours
  • Offer spontaneous programs to walk in visitors based on theme months or interesting natural phenomena

?Planning??

  • Prepare new programs, submit and edit program descriptions, request supplies and program needs, develop program materials
  • Work as part of a team to provide outstanding customer service and interpretive programming

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications?

  • Advanced training in program development or delivery
  • Maryland Natural History knowledge
  • Experience working with and caring for captive live animals (reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates)
  • Ability to communicate in another language a plus.?
  • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) or Host (CIH) with the National Association for Interpretation
  • Certified Maryland Master Naturalist
  • CPR/ First Aid certified

Minimum Qualifications?

  • BA/BS in education, natural resources, interpretation, or relevant sciences
  • Six years of experience and specialized training in skill area OR college graduate with 2 years of teaching experience
  • A Maryland Driver's license in good standing and ability to drive commission vehicles
  • At least 21 years of age, able to pass fingerprinting and online background check

Working Conditions

  • Work in Outdoor and Indoor Settings, may be exposed to inclement weather and outdoor hazards
  • Work is scheduled during weekends, evenings, and holidays, schedule may vary from 4-20 hours per week (up to 40 during summer camps) based on programs
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and hike for 3 miles over uneven terrain

The following information is a summary of benefits extended to all Seasonal employees of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). This is for informational purposes only and is subject to change.

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
