We are currently seeking (two) experienced, dynamic, highly organized, and professional leaders to fill our Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader positions within the Meadowbrook Management Area.

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a six-time National Recreational and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, has a career staff complement of nearly 800 employees, and serves a diverse population of more than one million residents in the Washington, DC area. Southern Parks Division meets both local and regional leisure needs by providing opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities in the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County. The division manages over 200 parks, including Urban, Local, and Regional Parks. Included in these parks are almost 200 playgrounds, 150 athletic fields, 60 miles of trails, and 50 picnic shelters. This division utilizes the skills of almost 200 employees and 100 pieces of equipment to accomplish the Department's mission. The selected candidates will assist with the management of diverse park operations and programs within the management area to provide a secure, safe, and enjoyable park experience for the public. The selected candidate will be responsible for crew supervision and park enhancement implementation within the work program.

Please Note: The salary range listed above represents the earning potential for this position. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Lead a team of park and facility maintenance workers in all aspects of general park maintenance.
  • Plan, schedule, assign, and monitor work while providing technical assistance to resolve problems.
  • Lead a team to perform tree planting and maintenance activities.
  • Leads team on minor construction projects and building renovations.
  • Apply fertilizer and pesticides as needed within certification.
  • Maintain and repair equipment, endorsing safe work practices.
  • Hauling heavy duty tractors, skid steer or other large equipment using a trailer and vehicles such as CDL Freightliner dump/plow and CDL Kenilworth roll-off bed.
  • Using our F-450 and F-550 class vehicles to haul equipment on our CAM CDL trailer.
  • Operation of mid-sized to large non-CDL equipment to include large mowers, tractors with attachments, backhoe, loader etc.
  • Operation of trucks, truck and trailer combinations, snowplows, dump trucks, trash trucks, etc.
  • Inspect work sites and determine best solutions for general maintenance.
  • Supervise the preparation of building facilities for special functions.
  • Identify turfgrass issues and formulate solutions.
  • Record daily tasks into the Enterprise Asset Management system.
  • Athletic field maintenance includes operating tractor w/ attachment to rake, drag and grade fields. Rebuild mounds and Homeplate areas on ball fields.
  • Inspects work quantity and quality of assigned staff.
  • Participate in employee evaluations and engagement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of athletic field maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, parks and park/general maintenance operation, safety, turf maintenance, pesticides and their application, and basic auto and equipment maintenance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an innate ability to express empathy.
  • Proven track record of success maximizing resources to get the work completed.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with a Parks Department or other large and complex government organization preferred.
  • Advanced ArcGIS skills and proficient in MS Office, enterprise software and specialized software.
  • Knowledge of local, State and Federal laws and policies.
  • Maryland Pesticide Applicator's certification.
  • Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.

Ability to communicate in another language a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
  • Pass Commission medical examination.
  • Depending upon an assignment, positions in this class may require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:

All plans are optional except the Defined Benefit and Long-Term Disability plans.

    Eligibility
    You have 45 days from your hire date to elect your benefits. Your coverage begins on the first of the month following receipt of your enrollment forms and required documentation.

    Retirement Programs
    • Defined Benefit Plan (Mandatory Participation) - Plan E excludes FOP members.

    Plan C: 9.5%*of base salary (FOP members only)
    Plan E: 4% of base salary up to maximum Social Security Wage Base (SSWB) and 8% in excess of SSWB.
