Description

Duties

This position is based at Coast Guard Air Station (CGAS) Atlantic City, NJ which is located at the Federal Aviation Administration Technical Center at the Atlantic City International Airport. The mission of CGAS Atlantic City is to support Coast Guard operations such as search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, port security, aids to navigation, and marine environmental protection for both District One and District Five. The position's primary purpose is to serve as the principal administrative assistant to the CGAS command cadre (i.e., the Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, and Command Master Chief).

Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include:
  • Performs a variety of administrative support duties which include the following: composing correspondence; researching and assembling information for various reports, briefings, and conferences; following up with staff members to ensure that various commitments are met; designing and organizing filing systems; maintaining special records and reports; and organizing the flow of clerical processes at the unit.
  • Reviews correspondence prepared for the command cadre. Checks for spelling and typographical errors and adherence to Coast Guard correspondence standards.
  • Sets up and maintains logs showing the status, location, and disposition of unit correspondence. Facilitates archiving and retrieval of all correspondence files.
  • Performs non-routine assignments such as locating and summarizing information from files and documents when this requires recognizing which information is or is not relevant to the problem at hand.
  • Performs the full range of procedural work of the office and provides office automation support utilizing knowledge of office automation hardware and software systems.

  • Applicants must be able to type 40 words per minute
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. This includes Time-In-Grade requirements for current status employees applying through merit promotion procedures. Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade.

Qualifications

AT THE GRADE LEVEL GS-07: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal sector.  Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include: preparing correspondence and other documents in proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and format; receiving visitors, maintaining files, incoming correspondence, typographical errors; scheduling supervisor's activities, composing correspondence, resolving problems, locating information, organizing workflow of office.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
