Duties

The position provides support of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Naval Engineering Department, Industrial Operations Division DD-Detroit which includes the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment in industrial, institutional, office, and residential building, and on ships.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:
  • Installing, modifying, repairing, loading and testing systems, circuits, equipment and controls with little or no check during the progress or upon completion of the work.
  • Interpreting and applying the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties e.g., voltage, voltage drop and current capability in series and parallel circuits.
  • Determining location of existing electrical devices and service entrances and placing new ones.
  • Planning and laying out work, tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems, and completing repairs and installations.
  • Installing, modifying, repairing, and maintaining electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Recruitment Incentive: Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent position are authorized to receive a one-time recruitment incentive of 10% of the salary, including locality for this position. Receipt of the bonus will require a 12 month service agreement.
