The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks, and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George's counties. In Prince George's County, we are also responsible for developing the County's public recreation programs.

The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising, and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George's County.
The Northern Region Parks Division (NRPD) is one of three maintenance Divisions within this Department and is composed of eight major work programs: Fleet Management/Trades, Building Maintenance, Area Maintenance, Playgrounds, Trails, Athletic Field/Turf Management, Trash/Recycling/Waste Management, Program Support, and the administrative section. The mission of NRPD is to provide professional, high-quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George's County and its customers.

Work Hours are 5:45 am - 2:30 pm

Annual Salary $39,717 - $70,342. Please note that this range represents earning potential. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Perform routine inspections of trail systems in the Northern Region, including primary, secondary, tertiary, and natural surface trails.
  • Respond to trail system concerns and maintenance needs.
  • Operating riding mowers, tractors with attachments, string trimmers, and backpack blowers to perform general grounds and trail maintenance.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to small workgroups while performing mowing operations.
  • Installs amenities such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fence (chain link and split rail), basketball rims and nets, tennis poles, nets, etc.
  • Performs tree maintenance duties. Operates chain saws. Operates chipping machine to grind brush into mulch. Works stump grinder to remove tree stumps.
  • Operates various vehicles and equipment that require a Commercial Driver's License.
  • Inform the Leader or Supervisor of job progress, completion, and any problems requiring attention.
  • Aids setting up special events and transporting stages requiring a CDL. Provides general assistance to park visitors. Assists in monitoring programs and events.
  • Lead small crews removing snow from sidewalks with hand shovels and blowers.
  • Occasionally performs routine custodial maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
  • Pass Commission medical examination.
  • Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:

    Working Conditions:

    This position may involve seasonal weekend work and seasonal work schedule adjustments. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects. The ability to lift 100 pounds is desirable.

It is not all-inclusive and is subject to change. Benefits listed are extended to all Merit System employees of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). All plans are optional except the Defined Benefit and Long-Term Disability plans.

    Eligibility
    You have 45 days from your hire date to elect your benefits. Your coverage begins on the first of the month following receipt of your enrollment forms and required documentation.

    Retirement Programs
    • Defined Benefit Plan (Mandatory Participation) - Plan E excludes FOP members.
    Plan: Employee Contribution
    Plan C: 9.5%*of base salary (FOP members only)
    Plan E: 4% of base salary up to maximum Social Security Wage Base (SSWB) and 8% in excess of SSWB.
