The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a six-time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, is currently seeking enthusiastic applicants who enjoy working with preschoolers, school-age children, teens and young adults to be Summer Program Directors in inclusive camp settings (including campers with and without disabilities). M-NCPPC is a bi-county agency serving a diverse population of approximately 2 million residents within Montgomery and Prince George's County.

Summer recreation jobs offer invaluable skill-building, leadership, training, and enrichment opportunities. Examples of Important Duties

Candidates are responsible for the overall supervision of the summer programs for participants ranging in ages 6-17, some of whom may have disabilities and the day-to-day operation of a comprehensive program. Duties include training, supervising, and evaluating staff and volunteers, providing supervision to program participants, developing, planning, and implementing an inclusive thematic curriculum/lesson plans for the program and evaluating programs and special events.

This position works closely with parents and M-NCPPC supervisors to ensure a safe, secure and customer friendly environment, promoting cooperation and coordinating with Prince George's County Public Schools personnel.

All summer program staff are required to attend pre-service training, Youth Camp Safety Standards training, food service training (where applicable), and obtain a CPR and First Aid certification prior to the beginning of camp. Answers all issues from parents and handles any concerns. Oversees and reviews records of attendance, completes incident or health log documentation, and documents inventory of all equipment on site. Responsibilities include the day-to-day supervision of program participants. Assists in planning, implementing, participating, and evaluating programs and special events.

Enforces programs rules of Youth Camp Safety Standards. Staff will work closely with parents and in some locations the Prince George's County Public Schools personnel. Ensures a safe, secure and customer friendly environment onsite and on field trips. Oversees program leaders conducting daily activities and the production of the weekly calendar. Responsible for establishing and maintaining a good rapport with participants, parents, and other staff. Since this is a summer only position, there is no paid vacation or holiday leave; sick leave is granted on an accrual basis.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess 2 years of experience with youth in the field of parks and recreation, physical education, childcare or a related field. Experience should include at least 24 weeks of previous experience in a camping or children's program as an administrator or supervisor. Candidates must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Positions are filled on an as-needed basis. Candidates are encouraged to contact the facility of interest to inquire about specific hiring needs.
  • All camp staff are required to attend pre-service training, Youth Camp Safety Standards training, food service training (where applicable), and obtain CPR and First Aid certification prior to the beginning of camp.
  • These positions are seasonal and do not include a benefits package.
  • Salaries are dependent upon qualifications.
  • A complete background investigation will be completed prior to hire.

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
