The Arts and Cultural Heritage Division, of the M-NCPPC Prince George's County Parks and Recreation Department, Harmony Hall Arts Center is seeking a part-time, year-round Vocal Instructor. The candidate must possess the following:
  • Strong background in vocal performance and training, preferably with formal education in music or vocal performance.
  • Proficiency in various vocal styles and genres.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with students of different ages and skill levels.
  • Ability to provide constructive criticism and motivate students' progress.
  • Patience, encouragement, and a passion for teaching and mentoring aspiring singers.
  • Flexibility in scheduling lessons to accommodate students' availability.
  • Familiarity with vocal training tools, software, or audio equipment is a plus.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Assessing Student Abilities: Evaluate students' current vocal skills, strengths, and areas of improvement to create customized lesson plans that meet their specific needs and goals.
  • Teaching Vocal Techniques: Instruct students on proper breathing techniques, posture, vocal warm-ups, vocal range development, pitch control, diction, and other essential aspects of singing.
  • Providing Repertoire Guidance: Assist students in selecting appropriate songs and repertoire that align with their vocal abilities, musical interests, and performance goals.
  • Correcting Vocal Issues: Identify and address vocal problems such as pitch inaccuracies, vocal strain, tonal quality, and vocal fatigue by providing targeted exercises and guidance for improvement.
  • Developing Performance Skills: Guide students in stage presence, interpretation, phrasing, dynamics, and overall musicality to enhance their performance skills and connect with their audience effectively.
  • Monitoring Progress: Regularly track and evaluate students' progress, providing constructive feedback and encouragement to motivate their growth and development.
  • Collaborating with Accompanists: Coordinate with pianists or accompanists to provide appropriate musical accompaniment during lessons and performances.
  • Preparing for Auditions and Performances: Assist students in preparing for auditions, competitions, or public performances by offering guidance on song selection, performance preparation, and stage confidence.
  • Staying Updated: Continuously enhance knowledge and skills in vocal pedagogy, music theory, and industry trends to provide the most up-to-date instruction and guidance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Music or a related field
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total 6 years

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
