Description

This position directs the transportation safety management process and provides overall support and guidance of all BDF's local transportation operation locations. The Fleet Safety Manager's primary responsibility is to ensure that the company complies and adheres to all federal, state, and local regulations, identify and drive key safety training initiatives, continue to evolve BDF's safety culture through innovation and communication.

Job Responsibilities
  • Identify, plan, and implement training/safety policies and programs.
  • Advise and lead employees on various safety related topics through educational seminars, webinars, and other communications on a regular basis.
  • Continual review of existing policies and procedures.
  • Recruit and hire new safety employees if necessary.
  • Vet, interview, onboard new drivers.
  • Identify, mentor, and grow employees within the BDF system.
  • Ensure compliance with all required regulations/protocols.
  • Identify regulatory compliance risks/concerns and make recommendations/implement solutions to mitigate.
  • Prepare and present reports on accidents and violations and determine causes.
  • Oversee workplace repair, installations and any other work that could harm employee safety.
  • Working knowledge of federal/state/local safety regulations particularly FMCSA/FMCSR's/CVSA/OSHA including but not limited to:
    • CDL and Medical card compliance
    • DQ File compliance/maintenance
    • Quarterly filings - IFTA/NYHUT/CTHUT/KYU/NM etc.
    • Drug & Alcohol program/FMCSA Clearinghouse
  • Maintain and audit all files, processes, reporting, regulation compliances, vendors, etc as needed to remain in legal compliance with all governing bodies.
  • Make recommendations to streamline processes, procedures, etc to grow and operate at optimal efficiency.
  • Continued education in all related industry safety, compliance, and maintenance related subjects and changing regulations.
  • Work with, communicate to, and manage teams on compliance, safety and maintenance related items.
  • Other tasks as needed.
Competencies
  • Intermediate knowledge of Word/Excel/Power Point.
  • Working knowledge of the performance management/monitoring systems.
  • Analysis and identification of risk trends, problems, and solutions.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely using appropriate mediums (for example, face to face, email, presentations) listen effectively, demonstrate understanding, and clarify meaning for others.
  • Ability to analyze, define, diagnose, and resolve problems based on sound logic and rationale.
  • Ability to develop, coach, and mentor others including the ability to provide development experiences and network opportunities, advise, and teach to prepare others for effective job performance.
  • Ability to interact cooperatively and collaboratively with others as a team, including those holding divergent and/or opposing views and goals.
  • Understand, apply, track, and communicate meaningful operations and safety performance metrics.
Work Environment

Remote working position (with a minimum) regular quarterly travel to all DC locations. Travel requires walking, sitting, flying, and driving. Large amounts of administrative duties to include records/data maintenance, phone/email communications, meetings both virtual and in person with small and large groups.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the responsibilities, the employee is required to talk and hear at appropriate levels for the given environment.
  • The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers to handle paperwork or type.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral.
  • The employee is required to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee will occasionally need to climb, bend, kneel, stoop, crawl, or lay down when doing vehicle inspections.
Expected Hours of Work and Travel
  • Schedule is typically Monday through Friday and hours may vary to accommodate different time zones.
  • Periodic travel with overnight stays to other company locations, conferences, trainings, etc.
  • On call for accidents, investigations, emergencies.
Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in transportation environment working in a management/safety/DOT specialist capacity.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Associate degree or higher in Logistics, Supply Chain, or Transportation.
  • Credentialled certificate in Safety and/or Maintenance.
  • Certified brake inspector and/or annual inspector.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Member of a state/federal trucking organization.
  • Completion of FMCSA training courses.
  • Instructor Certificates.
