If this sounds like you, Montgomery Parks Facilities Management Division, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland is the place you want to be! We are currently seeking a dynamic, highly professional Environmental Sustainability Coordinator.

Facilities Management Division:
The Environmental Sustainability Coordinator will be part of the Facilities Management Division. This Division of 118 staff provides for the care and maintenance of the Department's physical assets including facilities, pavement, fleet, and major building systems.

Our Environmental Sustainability Coordinator will play an important role in serving as a resource on environmental initiatives: perform advanced professional planning work requiring considerable complexity, responsibility, and technical expertise. The Environmental Sustainability Coordinator will act as the primary contact with the external community regarding sustainable practices and provide leadership in the development of a countywide sustainability plan. The Environmental Sustainability Coordinator will provide technical guidance and expertise to other staff working on the Sustainability Committee and action teams and will serve on other committees to better serve the County in pursuit of sustainability and to fulfil the mission of providing an efficient and cost effective and waste reduction and recovery program to protect the environment and preserve natural resources. The successful candidate will be assigned project leadership and coordination responsibilities as well as independent work assignments and contribute their expertise as part of projects or work teams. Performs other duties as assigned. This position reports directly to the Assistant Division Chief.

Examples of Important Duties

Sustainability Committee
  • Serves as co-chair of the Sustainability Committee. Plans meetings quarterly or as needed to develop sustainability standards for the Montgomery Parks Department. Works closely with the Planning Department representative to ensure policy consistency. Recommends Sustainability Committee members for approval by the Deputy Director of Operations.
  • Plans events to promote sustainability awareness and practice within the Commission.
  • Continually develops innovative ideas for efficient and cost effective energy reduction practices. Performs consistent research analysis for new sustainability efforts.
Recycling and Solid Waste
  • Manages the preparation of the annual Resource Conservation Plan. Works with the contracted Energy Consultant to develop content. Assists with Planning Board Presentation.
  • Serves as Chairperson of the Departmental Recycling Committee. Plans meetings quarterly or as needed to develop and implement recycling standards throughout the Department. Assigns tasks to the committee members as needed. Ensures consistency in compliance with County, State, and Federal mandates regarding recycling.
  • Periodically reviews practices and performs site visits to review recycling and solid waste practices at individual facilities. Provides feedback based on observation to recycling Captains
Administration and Budget
  • Develops and writes complex administrative policies, procedures, and manuals. Supervises the development and implementation of comprehensive training programs, including negotiations with other government agencies, educational institutions, private contractors, and the development of promotional methods and materials.
  • Prepares, monitors, and manages designated CIP and Facilities Management budgets in relation to energy reduction projects .
  • Leads and directs the work and activities of Sustainability Specialist. Provides comments to Assistant Division Chief for evaluation of Sustainability Specialist.
Important Skills and Characteristics
  • Thorough understanding of resource conservation and sustainability practices; experience in training, educational outreach, and implementing organizational change
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple activities, meet tight deadlines, and creatively problem solve by selecting, organizing, and logically processing relevant information to resolve a problem.
  • Superb written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively with all partners. Establishes and maintains working relationships, including teamwork, with internal and external contacts.
  • Familiarity with public speaking and providing presentations to key stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in an environmentally related discipline, such as physical, environmental, biological, or health sciences, engineering, or sustainability.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License and qualify to drive Commission vehicles to locations within Montgomery County and occasionally Prince George's county.
  • Previous experience in performing research, data management, and data reporting.
  • Previous experience in development and implementation of sustainability-related policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Previous experience in public speaking and development and delivery of presentations to key stakeholders
  • Availability to work occasional overtime and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor's Degree in Human Resource Management, Finance, Business or any related field.
2. Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in Human Resource Management,
finance or any related field.
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total 8 years.

Class/Specification: Administrative Specialist III

May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.

Working Conditions:
Works in an office setting; may work outdoors briefly on an incidental basis. Work is primarily sedentary and requires very light to light physical effort. May be subject to various job demands such as high volume of work and tight deadlines.

All plans are optional except the Defined Benefit and Long-Term Disability plans.

Eligibility
You have 45 days from your hire date to elect your benefits. Your coverage begins on the first of the month following receipt of your enrollment forms and required documentation.

Retirement Programs
  • Defined Benefit Plan (Mandatory Participation) - Plan E excludes FOP members.

Plan C: 9.5%*of base salary (FOP members only)
Plan E: 4% of base salary up to maximum Social Security Wage Base (SSWB) and 8% in excess of SSWB.
