Monitors and coordinates the Dallas County Health and Human Services Public Health Laboratories (PHL) biosafety program, ensuring the safety and security of all biosafety activities, particularly those involving select agents and toxins. Responsibilities 1. Collaborates with the Biosafety Officer in the development and regular updating of comprehensive safety policies and standard operating procedures designed to mitigate hazards and include intervention strategies for potential safety breaches. 2. Contributes to writing and reviewing detailed risk assessments related to the use of biohazardous materials which validate safety measures and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations. 3. Assists in development and training of staff in the hazards associated with biological materials used in the laboratory to mitigate risks. Instructs staff on work practices and techniques in response to hazardous spills or exposures. 4. Investigates safety and environmental incidents; identifying causes, writing reports, and incorporating preventative measures to prevent their recurrence. 5. Performs regular audits/inspections of laboratories and facilities to ensure adherence to safety regulations and procedures. 6. Responds to emergencies of biosafety and biosecurity in laboratories, possibly outside of normal work hours. 7. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Experience and Training: Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a safety-related field. Occupational Safety is strongly preferred. Two (2) years of work related experience in a safety role. Prefer experience in a laboratory setting. Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience with biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) and biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) protocols. Proficiency in conducting and applying biohazard risk assessments is essential. Physical/Environmental Requirements: Requires the physical ability to bend, sit, and stand for extended periods. Capable of lifting up to 30 lbs. Standard office environment. Ability to drive to various work site locations. Travel 5-10%. Must have the ability and be comfortable wearing PPE and respirator in containment facilities. |
