Description

Performs or supervises staff performing microbiological, molecular, biochemical, and serological testing and other services for the detection, diagnosis, treatment and control of diseases and environmental health hazards in a public health laboratory.

Management Scope: Supervises exempt and non-exempt employees.

Responsibilities

1. Performs and supervises complex technical procedures for the detection, isolation and identification of infectious agents, including emerging pathogens and agents that could be used in a biological terrorist event.

2. Performs and supervises the screening and supplemental testing on blood specimens for detection of sexually transmitted diseases, lead and other highly infectious agents, using molecular microbiology techniques (PCR).

3. Validates and interprets laboratory test data; keeps records and prepares routine reports; orders supplies for laboratory; and maintains time and attendance.

4. Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures; complies with safety rules and regulations while working in the laboratory.

5. Performs preventive maintenance procedures on equipment and instruments; troubleshoots equipment problems using manuals and/or telephone consultations with equipment representatives.

6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of standard software applications. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public. Skilled in the operation of microbiological laboratory equipment.

For position(s) in the Bioterrorism/Preparedness Unit: Requires skill in handling hazardous and dangerous microorganisms. Must be skilled in the proper handling, decontamination and notification to proper authorities when spills and/or leaks of transported material occurs. Share 24- hour on-call time with laboratory director and other employees. Must possess a valid Texas driver's license, with good driving record and reliable transportation.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:
Ability to lift, carry and push up to 40 lbs., unassisted. Ability to wear required laboratory safety equipment to include but not limited to masks, safety coveralls, boots, and respirator and perform required activities. Works in a laboratory environment testing potentially hazardous specimens. Ability to travel to various work site locations.
