Description

This role is part of the Advanced Analytics and AI group within the Enterprise Data and Insights organization. The position is responsible for managing a team of Data Scientists and leading the authoring and managing of data science solutions within the realms of optimization, simulation, statistical modeling and forecasting, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to enhance business process execution and/or business decision-making ability within various divisions of Sherwin-Williams.

This role will be expected to lead complex projects with a potentially high degree of ambiguity and provide clarity and actionable direction to those initiatives, report on the progress of those projects, and validate that the solution designed for those projects meet customer expectations.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

- Strategy and Planning:
  • Collaborate with business leaders as well as ED&I leadership to identify opportunities for Data Science projects.
  • Collaborate with business leaders and customers as well as ED&I leadership to quantify project's ability to provide anticipated value to the business (time and monetary savings, increases in sales, improved customer service, improved ability to plan both short- and long-term, etc.), and establish a timeline for estimated return on investment.
  • Collaborate with key customers as well as ED&I leadership to author quarterly work plans via a governance process.
  • Lead research into tools and methodologies to identify those that can best help serve the needs of customers.
  • Advance data science practice within the company by building strategic partnerships.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, refinement, and alignment of company strategy for data science and its related fields (forecasting, machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc).
- Design and Deployment:
  • Lead project discovery through requirements gathering, analysis, design documentation, and impact analysis for project design.
  • Plan and organize project tasks for team of data scientists, report progress to ED&I and business leadership, and coordinate with key customers as well as other teams within ED&I and IT.
  • Lead efforts to apply and promulgate the use of advanced data science techniques within the areas of optimization, simulation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to complex business problems.
  • Collaborate with multiple levels of the ED&I organization on projects when applicable.

- Operational Management:
  • Lead design and implementation documentation efforts.
  • Lead efforts to ensure model sustainability.
  • Maintain relationships with key consumers of departmental services and address concerns as they arise.
  • Communicate project results to all areas of the organization, including peers within ED&I, business leadership, and business customers.
  • Ensure cooperation with peer functional areas.
  • Conduct activities like staffing; performance and resource management; and strategic direction of the team.
  • Set employee objectives; monitor and evaluate performance; and provide feedback and mentoring.
  • Create and maintain development plans for each team member, including training, skills assessment, career planning, and goal planning.
  • Manage personal growth objectives for the team in conjunction with the career development office.
Incidental Functions:
  • Assist with other projects as necessary to contribute to efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
  • Responsible for hiring activities and fulfilling affirmative action obligations and ensuring compliance with the equal employment opportunity policy.
  • Provide periodic 24/7 on-call support of specific functions.
  • Lead departmental or divisional meetings as requested.
  • Up to 25% travel as required (domestic and international).
  • Work outside the standard office 7.5 hour workday as required


Qualifications

Formal Education & Certification:

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
Preferred:
  • Master's degree.
Knowledge & Experience:
  • 10 years experience in an IT role or a non-IT role involving statistical analysis and machine learning/AI with increasing responsibility
  • 4+ years of management experience
  • Skilled in statistical analysis techniques
  • Skilled in data acquisition techniques
  • Skilled in creating models and/or simulations
  • Knowledge of software development and support methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience communicating and presenting to multiple organizational levels
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrated experience leading team development efforts of complex technical solutions
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with business process owners to identify requirements for complex technical solutions
  • Skilled in Data Science-related languages (Python/R, and SQL)
  • Skilled with advanced optimization techniques, such as linear optimization, evolutionary algorithms, simulated annealing
